you are probably hearing the juice reacting with the heat of the atomizer. This is a normal sound. Kind of like a gurgling sound. this can sometimes mean you have a little too much juice in the atty. You can take off the atomizer and blow through the battery end into a paper towel and rid the excess. Or just keep vaping it until you use up the excess..

sizzlin is fine - presuming you have the cart in place and can hear a sizzle?
If not you might want to blow out the atty in case there's any PG init (what they often use to ship so it doesnt dry out the wick) - unscrew it - blow through it from the end that hte cart goes into (I find this easier), and make sure the battery end is in a tissue or something.
Sizzling noises WITH a cart in place just means the liquid has reached the wick/hot coil and is vaporizing. Gurgling however is bad and then you need to blow out the atty as above :) Its easy to overfill a cart when you DIY but flooding usually doesn't ruin anything (I should know I do it a lot lol)

I just got it in the mail today, it's making a odd sizzle noise. Is this common?
.

Hi & Welcome aboard!

Maybe ... you did get all the preservative / primer out of it, didn't you? If you rinsed it with very hot water, you blow-dried it, didn't you? Any moisture droplets could cause this.

If it's more of a gurgle than a sizzle, you may have too much eJuice in it. If that is the case, blot the open end of the cartridge on a tissue and start puffing away.

I've had my 510 for 3 days now, and I really like it!

Good Luck!

Ditto to what CaptJay said ... there's all kinds of suggestions on here as what to do about the preservative / primer fluid on the atomizer. I figured it was something like the Cosmoline that they spray on lots of metal stuff that gets shipped across the salt water & wanted to get rid of it!

I blew as much as I could out of the atomizer - blow on the threaded end into a tissue. In so doing, I got some on my fingers and I didn't like the taste of it at all. Not having any straight grain alcohol (200 proof ethanol) and forgetting that I had a bottle of 151 proof RonRico Purple Label :)hubba:) in the cabinet, I rinsed them with 91% Isopropyl Alcohol (high-test rubbing rubbing alcohol - WalMart) and dried them with the blow-dryer.

Good Luck!
