All the "wall wart" is doing is stepping down the 120v (or 240v for Europe) down to the 5V that the USB charger wants. The actual charging circuitry is in the charger itself, the piece that the battery screws into. I have a nice charger cable in my car for my cellphone and it has a USB port built into the part that plugs into the car, so I am able to charge my phone and a ego battery at the same time.

On the A/C adapter, there should be a sticker. Output: 5v, XXX mA.

It's the XXX mA you have to pay attention to. That tells you the max draw that it can handle. On the charger, there's an Input: 5v, XXX mA that should be LESS than the amount on the A/C adapter.

So basically, make sure they are both 1) Same voltage, and 2) the charger's input (draw) is LESS than the A/C adapters output.

Oh yeah, forgot the MAH output. You actually have to look in 2 places for that. The wall wart, and the charger itself. If you have a charger that does 420mah, you want a wall wart that meets or exceeds that. Looks like a genuine Joye wart pushes out 5v500mah, and the charger is 4.2v420mah. So I would imagine that an USB port that can push 500mah would be sufficient. 500mah is the standard for ports on your computer as well.

Yeah. That's what I said. :p

Your point about USB is a good one though. Also true for most passthroughs (the ones that trickle charge a battery from the USB). Not true for 5 volt "Direct PTs" though. Anyway, it's customary to suggest a wall-wart (A/C adapter) instead of a computer USB port due to the possibility of a shorted wire or other malfunction frying a computer USB port. Why risk a computer USB port?

Also to the OP, I think some of the i<whatever> devices are intelligent and want to communicate with the device, so they may not work. Whereas a generic "wall wart" should work. Not sure on this one since I currently avoid i<whatever> like the plague. However if the stickers read like it should work and it doesn't, that's one possible reason why.
