About the only gotcha is making sure you have a USB power supply with enough output. There are sit-and-go type passthroughs, with an in-line battery, that should work off of most USB ports OK, since you're actually vaping off of the battery. The true pass-throughs, however, may well output USB voltage (somewhere in the 4.7 - 5V range); in that case you need a USB source able to put out at least 2000 mA (2 amps), to be able to use cartos/atties of 2.5 ohms or higher, in order to get enough current.

(Personally I like 3 - 3.3 ohms on a true pass-through -- lower ohms gets too hot, burn most flavors. Also, on a true PT don't bother trying to run a 1.5 - 2 ohm LR atty or carto, as they need way too much current).

There are car lighter USB adapters rated for 2 amps, as well as plug-in 120VAC USB power supplies rated for 2 amps -- much safer than risking losing a PC if the USB pass-through has a short, under $10 each.

I can't speak to the 510s, but my KR808D-1 XL PT is a dream. Nothing could be easier or handier -- plug it in, screw on a carto, and vape away. The only care it needs is replacing the carto when it's empty.

I didn't plug mine into my computer because I don't have any empty USB ports on the front of my computer. Instead, I got another AC adapter, the same kind as usually comes in kits to allow recharging from either AC plug or USB port.

I understand there's some concern about the current draw of a PT that doesn't have a built-in battery, but I'll let someone with more experience with 510s address that.

The current is described by current = voltage divided by resistance, where voltage = the USB voltage and resistance = the atomizer or cartomizer resistance.

Standard USB spec only requires something like 500 mA to be delivered on a port to be in spec. If I have a true 5V output on the USB, and a 3 ohm carto, 5/3 = 1.67amps (1670 mA) needed, much greater than 500 mA. Some USB ports may be able to provide that current (there's not an upper limit that I know of), typically for instance there may be 2A total available on a bank of 4 USB ports serviced by the same chip set.

Sometimes thngs will work marginally -- I have an 808 PT that will work off of certain docking station ports with certain cartos, but not with other cartos; it is right on the hairy edge of what can be done.

With me dedicated plug-in 2A supply I have 100% consistency -- none of my cartos are < 2.5 ohm resistance, so everything I use works, all the time.

Both of my mods have 5V PT options and there's no way I'd ever plug them in to my computers USB ports. I only use a USB wall adapter rated for 5V devices and I've never had a problem.

^This. Some computers don't deliver enough amps through the usb port to properly operate a PT, even if they properly override the 500ma USB power spec. Plus it is possible that you will damage your mother board if the atty shorts. The protection circuit on the USB ports can fail so it's just prudentr to spend the money for a wall wart. Better safe than sorry.
