My first USB PT for a kr808 lasted just one day. I looked for a broken wire but that wasn't the problem, and both wires were connected to the battery firmly. I wondered if a desktop PC USB port can burn out a PT, and also if a PT can burn up a PC's motherboard (I'd hate to ruin a PC to use a $15 PT)? Or are these devices generally safe both ways (I'm sure anything is possible but maybe very rare)? My hope is, of course, that I just got a bad PassThrough and I should try again.

IMHO I think you got a bad PT. I had one that would just mysteriously come on and off at random. Like you I pulled it right away. It did not damage the USB port. Depending on your motherboard manufacturer, you may have built-in short protection.
Best of luck.

In which case, it's been replaced with another bad PT. I figured the PT would be my work horse as I'm at this PC most of the day. What a drag. (no pun)

Not all USB ports are power ports try a different one. But I would not use a PT on a PC when you can get a 2amp 110v for $10.00. The other thing is if your USB did have overload protection you would need to reset it to work.

Thanks. I ordered an AC/USB adaptor from amazon last week and it should arrive in a few days. I will try using that instead of my PC. (The other ports are in the back of the PC and would be too inconvenient to use).

Which one did you order Maxwell? I'm looking for one too.

I've seen this suggestion several places, and I'm wondering why you need a 2amp. I can get a 500mA locally for less than $3. Would that work?

In order for your PT to deliver @ 5v you need the 2amp supply

If you are using the in-line battery through a USB port you will only deliever at what the battery is rated for

Here's what I ordered: Amazon.com: AC to Dual Port USB Wall Charger: Electronics BTW, they have refill syringes too.

They've raised the price since I ordered mine, but they are $20 at Radio Shack for a single USB port.

Product Description
This AC to dual port USB charger allows you to charge many mobile devices. Just plug the charger into a wall outlet, connect your devices through the USB port (USB cable not included), and your device will be charging. The red LED light will indicate that the device is charging. The input is AC 100-240V and the output is DC 5V, with a max of 1000mA.
