using 45mm cartos in a 35mm tank

It will work, the carto will just protrude a bit.

One of my Boge cartos was a cm or so longer than the rest (same box, it's weird) & worked fine in my tank just jutted past the top cap.

ha! yes, and IMHO they look pretty styin' with the tank suspended midway up the carto...
