Please do not stop talking about babies, I happen to love the subject! My first nursing job was in NICU because they are such precious innocent creatures. I need to vent for a sec though, just don't let me thread-jack

One of my residents at work, a 12 year old girl, has begun flying backwards in her treatment. She's been here over a year, she made a little progress but not a lot, and hidden beneath her loud, rude, and offensive behavior there is a heart of gold. I've seen it because I take time to let her yell at me as much as she wants until she wears down and tells me what she thinks she's feeling. I care so much for her, I can't really express it. Because of her behavior, her language, her volume, and her anger, I'm almost the only person in the world that cares about her this much. She's about to have a court date, and there's an extremely good chance that she's going to either be thrown into a more restrictive placement that I personally don't see helping her, or shoved back to the same screwed up family that got her here. The one that had her dress as a prostitute for Halloween last year and actually DID prostitute her out to friends before she came here.

This can't really be the world we live in, can it? I'm far too old to believe in fairy tales, but where are the happy endings? How can a child be subjected to a life like this? And her life is not nearly as soul-crushingly horrifying as the lives of some other residents.

I signed on to do this because I could make a difference, and often (though less and less lately) we do make an amazing difference and rebuild these kids from an environment I can't imagine. But when something like this happens, when I'm the only one with hope left and the system has given up... it's just hard. I miss hospice. That was sad, but I knew the end result from the get-go. All I had to do was provide comfort and compassion. All the comfort and compassion in my body and soul won't help this girl.

But I can tie this back to babies! Every birth announcement I hear, when I know (or online-know) a part of their family brings me joy. Every loving family means one less child to see the things my residents have seen. One more child with "normal" ups and downs. "Normal" problems and triumphs. "Normal" loving and appropriate relationships.

Nana, cherish that child. Love him and spoil him. TU4V, please do the same. And both of you take pride in the loving and stable world these children have entered by joining your families.

 You did hospice work? You are a saint, SIR Kris.

SO ....lets keep this upbeat for nana ! Its a celebration of good things :)

Sorry. I knew better; emotions just got a little heavy.

I meant that last bit though! Babies aren't just unbelievably cute, they mean a fresh start and chance to let hope run wild. Especially when they're not yours and you can actually sleep more than once or twice in the first few months

Kris no worries...we all know how stressful your job is (hugz) for you :)

I'm getting ready to go meet my sweetie pie now & we will be taking pictures for sure.
My son-in-law is over the moon & didn't even put my daughter on the phone when I called LOL. I got a full description of everything Jack was doing in the 5 minutes I was on the phone. :)
See you all later tonight.

Kris darlin.....I commend you dear! I don't think I could do what you do on a daily basis! I'd want to foster them all!!!

The best advice I can give you for that little girl.....I can think of no better advocate for her than you! If the system wants to give up on her (she's 12 for crying out loud!!! shame system SHAME)....do what you can to force them NOT to give up on her. She is still so young and so impressionable....there is still so much hope for her. Be there when you can to remind her that people DO still care about her! (((((hugs)))))

Thoughts and prayers are with you and that sweet child!

Kris, I feel you. I grew up in a home where expression was forbidden and I had a few who let me wear down so they could love me. I have since had my heart crack wide open for troubled kiddos. Whenever a child acts out, my heart breaks and I just want to know what is going on in their lil hearts so I can love them. Yes, my dream is to be a child psychologist, if only to love.

My daughter falls into a behavior category. She wears nearly everyone out (in patience), but not me. I see her amazing little heart and spirit and I'll be damned if anyone will break that! :D

CONGRATUMALATIONS NANA!

Baby Jack arrived at 5:27 A.M. weighing in at 7lbs, 9oz.

I'll meet him this afternoon when my daughter gets a room. The hospital is overcrowded with newborns so she is still a labor/delivery room.

It must have been quite a January in New England! My niece is set for induction after seven AM tomorrow, and they'll call her when a bed becomes available. Hopefully the baby will attempt "coming out" on his own!

Well, Nana... how absolutely wonderful, in the very truest meaning of the word!! Welcome to the world and Happy Birth Day Jack!! And ThankU too!! My goodness Woot!!

Kris - my gosh. I can't even imagine. ((hugs))

Well folks, got all my stuff together over the weekend, packed, stacked, donated and threw out. Moving man came by today to give me an estimate, which I should receive tomorrow. I've called the airline and have to make a decision by tomorrow on whether to go through with the booking on miles alone or miles plus dosh. I move to England 1 week from Friday. GAAAHHHHH!!!

And through it all... not one old cancer stick. My PV is never out of my hand and I may have gone up a notch on the nicotine (thank goodness for Wow Cowboy!) but not one single stinky. I am gosh darned proud of myself. :)
