I assume you have an ohm reader? The trick when starting out is to play around and find what hits your desired resistance. I've never used anything above 28 gauge but if you're looking to build a dual coil build at 1.5 ohms then I'd probably go for 32 gauge kanthal unless you want a ton of wraps.

This is a helpful website well worth bookmarking if you're rebuilding. It should answer your question.

Check out this resource:

You can input your target wire guage, target resistance as well as the width of the object you're wrapping around (ie, my screwdriver yields a 2mm inside diameter) and it will give you some good base ideas for wraps on your coil. Keep in mind if you're doing the dual coil setup, that's not total wraps, that's PER COIL not both combined.

You'll definitely need a higher-gauge wire like 30 or 32. The Vamo V6 is capable of a maximum 20 watt output, and that will be split between the two coils. Ten watts per coil won't be enough to adequately heat up kanthal any thicker than that given your resistance limits. IMO you'd be better off using a single coil with that setup.

Thanks for all the replys, I decided on the 32 gauge wire and I'm also ordering some 28 Guage for single coil builds in the future. Any other suggestions or ideas before I jump into building?

Just go for it and have fun! You'll learn the most by just trying different builds to figure out what works for you, and what doesn't.

Here's a link to the steam-engine build, if you do try a dual parallel. Make sure to change the "inner diameter" of the coil to match whatever you're wrapping around, precision screwdriver, etc.

Unfortunately, it looks like it's gonna be pretty wide, at 1.3cm. It might fit though, who knows?
