So, I've been thinking about getting a Vamo since a few days after I got my eGo kit. I want to get into rebuildables, at least I think I do. I'll still need to do some reading, and get a multimeter, but I'm pretty sure it's the way I want to go. I want the most possible flavor and plumes of vapor.. rebuildables right? So, if I get into rebuildables and I'm going with that, a mech would make the most sense right? I do have limited funds, so I would be upset if I got something I didn't wind up using. I'll still have and use my eGo batteries/clearos for portability reasons, so getting both isn't something I'm interested in doing. The only thing I'm worried about is that I like to change my flavors a lot. I have one I vape consistently, and a bunch I'll vape some throughout the day. So, I was thinking a rebuildable atomizer tank for my main flavor, and then a rebuildable dripping atomizer for other flavors?

Now, also, with rebuildables and mechs, which have no protection, and building sub-ohm coils, how do you know how to not pop the coil? I still have a bunch of reading to do, as I said before, but that's one bit I'm extra curious about and I figured I'd ask. If someone has some links to anything particularly chock-full of information, I'd be happy to check that out.

So, my main question is: If I'm going to get into using rebuildables, should I skip getting the Vamo, and instead get a mech? I see some mechs are ridiculously expensive, what's the difference in pricing? Is it just build quality, or are some somehow better?

mechs are best for sub ohm coils (1 ohm or lower). for a regular resistance coil 1.5 ohm or higher, any VV/VW mod will work fine.
something like the vamo has short protection and resistance checking built in. and oh a mech any higher resistance coil will work ok but not for long, as soon as the battery dies off a bit the vape will suffer.

i run all my rebuildables on my provari and vamo no problems with a coil right about 1.8 ohms.
the idea of a dripper for switching flavors and a main flavor tank is what i do.

Now, also, with rebuildables and mechs, which have no protection, and building sub-ohm coils, how do you know how to not pop the coil?

you just have to be careful and go slow, with a mech a multimeter is a needed to check resistance then fire it slowly to work on shorted coils or hotspots, ALSO with a mech protected batteries OR a battery fuse is very suggested for safety.
some mods have a HOTSPRING, it is a spring in the battery case that will soften and lose connection if overheated.

A dripper like an igo-L would be a great place to start into rebuildables, I use mine everyday and love it. You can switch flavors easy with it, but I ordered a couple more for flavors that don't go with my fav ones.

As for the vamo personally I would order an SVD from smoktech for $42 shipped or a mech from them like the k100 or kts for half the price of the SVD.

I am in a similar spot as you. I went ahead and got the Vamo before my mech that should arrive tomorrow. I've been rocking this Vamo for a little more than a month.

I decided to get the Vamo first so I could learn to do a few things before diving into mechs. Like how to fix hot spots on my coils, and get a good understanding what different wattages feel like. Gave me a good opportunity to try ribbons, different gauge wires and wicks and also for a bit more safety when screwing around. The Vamo won't fire anything with a <1.2ohm coil due to it's protection circuitry however. If you decide to go for a mech, it will perform as well as your battery can. Make sure you know the important details about your cells before trying to do sub ohm coils and trying to push more than 8 amps out of your little steam machine. Basic to Advanced Battery Information from Battery University This link has good primers on batteries, from terminology to functions.

I have an Octopus RDA and a AGA-T2, both running 1.6-ish ohm coils, works pretty well on my Vamo.

I will say that in my limited experience, the rebuildables can be fiddly, but it's been worth it even on a regulated device. Clearos and cartos don't even compare in terms of flavor vs. a rebuildable. Vapor production can be enhanced with higher wattage and more VG in your juice, but in general, my rebuildables beat my clearos in that too.

As for cost for some high end mechs, I'd see it as a price for build quality, limited availability and artistry. I'd love to have an Astro but no way in heck am I dropping the money required on a piece of gear that I have no clue how to operate.

TL:DR; I got the Vamo first to learn the fundamentals on, RBAs still work well with them, keep the Vamo's safety circuitry in mind when building coils however.

Just my two cents.
