I have cut my tobacco use in half thanks to vaping, but keep having issues with my devices. First I used an Aspire PocketX and loved it (after watching you tube video... intructions were useless!) I tried both coils (sub ohm and 1.2 ohm) and like the 1.2 better for my higher nicotine liquids (12-18) occasionally cleaned everything (including coil) with vodka (works great) and dried coil before priming. Burned out one coil (let it go empty vaping in the dark) Anyway, thought I lost it, so got an Evod (simple one) Not very impressed, and coild burned out very easily. Then (after weeks sitting in a hot car) found my PocketX again. Got some Naked American Patriot liquid (12, tobacco flavor, 65 vg/45pg) and really like it... wish it came in 18... I like my nicotine) I think sitting so long in car messed up the coil... not working too good (and stuck wi the sub-ohm coil for now) also, can't draw air (non-adjustable) will get new coilds but maybe it's my vaping technique. any advice?

Sitting in a hot car may have caused problems for the PockeX battery as well as the coil, so it would probably be best to replace it. Batteries are damaged by too much heat.

Coils are consumables in vaping. No matter what you do to clean them, they don't last more than a few days to a few weeks of regular use. I'd recommend picking up a few packs of replacement coils so they're ready to go when you need them. It's a bit of a pain to have to keep buying them, but they're an awful lot cheaper than cigarettes!

About the liquid, you can either look for other flavours that come in a higher concentration or you could buy some 100 mg/ml nicotine base and add a little to bump up the liquid you have. Nicotine is one of the less harmful substances in cigarettes, so I'd definitely recommend taking the nicotine as high as you need to to get off cigarettes.

Good luck, and welcome to ECF!

Its a little difficult to provide an answer to you question.

You've already found that vaping can help you cut down on your smoking. I can't resist suggesting that maybe its time for you should upgrade your gear.

A battery device which has variable wattage would allow you to adjust your vape "on the fly". A tank which has adjustable air control and allows for a variety of coils (different ohm ratings) would also allow you to adjust your vape to your personal preference.

I agree with the above statements that coils are considered a consumable and disposable product. They only last 2 - 3 weeks. Considering their cost to a pack of cigarettes, they're a bargain. Once you have your battery device and tank, your only monthly costs are replacement coils and e-liquid.

If you're truly serious about quitting cigarettes, get some serious gear.

Coil cartridge life depends a LOT on the type of vaping, type of juice, and how much it gets vaped. People are using terms like two weeks, which is a possible outside number, but the inside number is more like 3 days. Some types of coils can increase that number a bit, but not a whole lot.

If you’re after absolute minimum long term cost you may want to consider an RBA and DIY. It’s not really more difficult than trying to clean coil cartridges, and it’s a lot more effective. Remember coil cartridges are purpose designed to wear out and be unfixable. Capitalism and all. Before RBAs came on the scene every time a company came out with a product that it was possible to rebuild it sold really well until the company found out. They would then make it impossible to rebuild whereupon the product died. Now there are products actually designed from the ground up to be rebuilt. It’s the R in RBA

If you don’t want to mess with RBAs just suck it up and buy coils regularly. This “maybe I can eek another day out of it if I spend 20 minutes washing it” thing is false economy. Get a device that is designed to have a replaceable wick or don’t.

There's actually mileage in what both Baditude and Bombastinator say.

I personally am in a lazy phase at the moment, can't be bothered with building coils wicking etc and have settled for a good tank with replaceable coils - and I do agree with the suggestion that better gear = a better vaping experience.

Until I started making up my own unflavoured and menthol juices some years ago I could expect a coil to last me a week approximately - with clear home brew liquid I can genuinely get up to six weeks out of coil - it's the sugars etc in most commercial juices that kill coils.

Somewhere down the road a bit on your vaping journey - you might want to research squonking, it could possibly be a what really makes a difference for you ... but that's probably for the future.

By the way, heat does indeed affect battery performance and life - normally a charged iStick will last me a day to a day and a half - the year my wife broke her ankle and we had to stay on in Southern Spain throughout the hottest summer for 70 years with daytime temps of 140 F dropping to 90 F at night however, I was using two iSticks a day, just vaping at my normal rate. Came the cooler weather they went back to normal - one is till in service three years on albeit fading away with Old Age.

Thank you all for the good advice. I am on a very low budget so upgrading is not an option for now. I really liked my Aspire PockeX, so if I can save it (yes, I will stock up on coils) would be great. Also, what would be a similar product at similar price? I'm very techno oriented and have a volt meter... can I test my PockeX battery (fully charged) to see if it was permanently damaged? I am a bit confused about air flow. Can someone explaing, specifically, how this works with my PockeX and my Evod (both do not have adjustable flow) The Evod is what I call "upside down" fill. What is the difference between the two types. Lots of questions. Is the Evod (almost new) worth buying coils for? It might be a "fake"... how do I tell? I am stuck with the juice I have (60ml) should I keep it in the fridge or just cool place (to prevent oxidation)? I don't care about the tobacco flavor... just didn't want fancy flavors and sweeteners (some flavors taste like perfume to me and I did find sweeteners clog things up quicker)

As others have mentioned, a coil has to be one of those things that you just have to replace whenever it starts to taste funny or do the rebuildable route...if your buying real coils, following proper wattage limits and priming correctly your going to get limited use depending on type of juice and vaping style. Even if one gets only 3 days from a 2 dollar coil, it's still a ton cheaper then cigs and a lots healthier. I know it's hard to toss something when you think you can get more out of it, but that might be one reason why your still smoking a few...I also love my nic, specifically 24mg and know it's a bit hard to find , so don't try and settle for 12mg and get that 18mg juice. There are vendors that sell higher nic, heathers heavenly vapes for one and their tobacco's are the bomb!!! Maybe between both the new coils and slightly higher nic, it might shave a few more cigs .....

Why not try the Aspire Tigon Kit and use 25mg Nicotine with the MTL coils..

I know it's hard to toss something when you think you can get more out of it,

THIS is one of the reasons I can't use drop in coils on a regular basis. I can afford them, no problem at all. But I'm a tightwad at heart anyway. So with drop-ins, my brain always subliminally says - "Self - you can get thru the rest of the day with this coil. Just keep vaping it, and replace tonight. Or tomorrow. Maybe you just have vaper's tongue at the moment."

And then I don't enjoy my vape as much.

RTA's, my brain says- "So what? You're throwing away about $0.03." I replace, and my brain is as happy as my palate. Win-win.

Opinionated, you just made my day! It's perfect... my main issue with the PockeX is no airflow adjustment, and the Tigon has an even better battery. By the way, It seems I was priming my PockeX coils wrong (using side hole instead of top hole. but priming wick holes of course) I will order coils for the PockeX for now, but can't wait to try the Tigon (what a bargain!) I am very happy with my e-juice since I got my EVOD working (I still hate the piece of sh*t) I got 5 coils from a local shop, and first coil I tried was shorted (light blinks 3 times) swapped to another coil and it works (coils were loose in a box... maybe crap quality) Those damned coils are so small no surprise. I was so stressed out I ended up bumming smokes from 3 different people (and the last few days resorted to cheap cigars) I love vaping... just wish there was more quality control on devices and especially coils. Peace, love, and vape!

Cheap ... coils! I have an ohm meter (nothing fancy, but I can tell if the coil has a "short") Tested the bad coil... dead short. Tested the others and sure enough on more bad coil. Took them back to the shop and they gave me a couple new ones. Tested those and one more bad coil. That's 3 out of 7. Anyway, moving on... ordering coils for my PockeX. Aspire has them 5 for $15, but vaping.com has them a bit cheaper. Are they official Aspire coils? Don't want to get ripped off again. I know that I messed up getting a cheapo vape pen (still not happy with the EVOD, even with new coils) so lesson learned. All my friends that are regular vapers have devices costing over $100. I have basically wasted $60 so far. I will save up for a decent device.

Welcome and great that you're reducing the nasties :)

I haven't got much to add at the moment except to stress that your nicotine levels are the most important thing when you give up. If you can get that sorted you can maybe drop the last cigs out of the equation and use the money to get yourself a decent set up...Less than 50 euros will get you something decent to start with.

Good luck :)

Yes everything at vaping.com is authentic.. I've never had any problem with them.

As you pointed out though, sometimes quality control sucks in China and like the majority of electronic cigarette manufacturers, Aspire is also a China based company.

Generally speaking, 3 out of 7 coil being faulty is bad, but getting 1 or 2 bad ones out of every 2 or so, (5) packs is about the normal.. maybe not every 5-pack you buy will have a dud, but then you'll come across that pack, and it will have a bad one in there.

Most places (not even vaping.com I don't think) will replace them because coils are not warrantied through the manufacturer, so the occasional dud is just part of the cost of vaping.

Generally coils are inexpensive enough that coming across the occasional dud isn't that big of a deal.. you just throw it away and factor it in as cost. Still beats smoking..

But I do think you ran across something that exceeded the normal with the Evod coils - just for perspective.

Many people buy rebuildable tanks (like the Gear etc.) and make our own coils for a more flavorful and less expensive experience, but not everyone wants to go there. It's some measure of investment to start, but then coils are practically free for life if it's of interest.

If I could, I would love DIY... very experienced with electronics and have even made my own coils for speaker crossovers. Love to experiment, but not an option right now. My son said "there's a lot of cheap stuff from china... what do you expect?" What do you recommend for an affordable DIY device (what brand)? I hope some day to mostly give up the cigs, but still need that first one in the morning. At least I smoke american spirit... no additives, and always draw easy. I am OK with 12 nicotine level IF the device works! Nicotine can relax you and stimulate your mind... I like that. On a side note, also interested in CBD oil and "other uses". Have considered mixing all of the above. Don't know if these forums discuss such things... still new here.
