I had a tooth extraction today and the dentist said smoking was #1 cause for infection. I thought, well that's fine...gave that up. I never mentioned to him that I vaped.

Anyone know of potential problems with vapor after a tooth extraction? My thought was smoking tobacco was probably bad after a tooth extraction due to the smoke, chemicals and such.

As beebopnjazz said, the risk is dry socket. I vaped after a couple of extractions, but I use RDAs with very open draw and I was still careful not to draw too fast.

I've heard that the pain from a dry socket is quite high. If you don't want to risk it like I did you can always try the patch or another NRT for nicotine.

Best of luck with it!

Any suction action can cause dry socket - supposed to be very painful. Vaping, straws, etc.

I've had dry socket before and it's no joke. 10 times worse than any toothache I have ever had. As mentioned already, slow and very easy draws.

Good Luck!

I can sympathize with this... when I was still a smoker I developed a dry socket and wished for death!

If you are unfortunate enough to develop one, go to your local grocery store or pharmacy and buy a Toothache Kit that has teatree (spelling?) oil in it... You dip small balls of cotton in the oil, and CAREFULLY dab it in and around the opening. It is the ONLY thing that even helps make the pain almost tolerable.

Well when I smoked I even done so after a tooth extraction just really slow draws never had a dry socket but Ive heard they are no joke. Most PVs draw alot easier than an analog but I would still use extreme caution for the first day at least. Dont forget to keep that socket rinsed with warm salt water. At least thats what my dentist tells me lol. Hope you heal up soon. Good luck.

Just for information, toothache kits do NOT contain tea tree oil, but clove oil, a well known tooth anesthetic. You could also just buy oil of clove and apply directly to the sore tooth.

Best solution is to avoid suction for at least 24 hours after an extraction, especially if there were no stitches involved, as that increases the chances of having the clot dislodge, which is the first step to a dry socket.

One of my sons just had his wisdom teeth out. The doc told him "unofficially" because he knew he would vape anyway, to make sure he kept cotton in when he was vaping. He did and made it through fine.
A dry socket hurts like holy h... Been there, done that. My Dr. told me the same thing and I didn't listen. The next 2 wisdom tooth extractions were a piece of cake. He asked if I was going to follow doctors orders or would I be calling him begging for help again. I reached in the gauze jar and grabbed a hand full and asked if that answered his question. He smiled and told me to get out of his office. It's great to have a dentist in the family.

Just had molar pulled 3 weeks ago, I couldn't quit vaping so kept wet gauze over extraction and held it in place with my tongue while I vaped. I'd smoked before after getting wisdom teeth pulled , guess I was lucky I never had to deal with a dry socket but got the warning about using straws for a few days.

This worked for me, after the extraction of two molars last May. I had stitches closing the gums over the socket, and bone grafts in preparation for implants later, but still kept a cotton pad over the extraction site when vaping ...

I was momentarily a dual user at that time, tried smoking an analog, it felt like a railroad spike through my head. That pain actually kept me away from tobacco long enough to begin to see the benefits of vaping. Not sure if I could have done it any other way ...

My dentist is the one who recommended vaping without reservation, he vapes himself, and was never a smoker, just likes to relax with nicotine ... :D

I've had a few teeth pulled and smoked after a few hours of having a tooth pulled and I've also had a dry socket from smoking to soon after and drinking beer will also cause a dry socket. If you get a dry socket it will be 10 times worse than the worst tooth ache you've ever had. If you take very small short pulls of your device you should be fine.
