That place looks huge by the scale 150 square miles or so? crazy! I imagine GPS is a must.

I imagine it would be nice to have a GPS but I'm old school and just take a compass a good terrain map with grids and a protracter. Just about every year someone gets lost out there, it's a huge track of land, but a long time ago they did cut it up somewhat, so there are some old trails and stuff and roads that cut through. But, you can get a long way from anyone if you hike back in. I usually spend at least a day or two just stalking. I will get on a big track and walk it down, Sometimes it takes more than a day. Usually I walk about five miles or so in and then set up camp. Then I go for a walk. There isn't anything on earth like walking down a big old whitetail.

I put in for an Elk Permit every year but so far no luck. I have walked them down as well just for the thrill of it.

How are you Fire? Very shortly the horns will start to grow and thats when I start going into withdrawls. It will only get worse as season gets closer.
I believe I will pass on vaping Tink's, but I do have a bottle of apple flavoring just waiting for bow season to open up. I have a doe bedding her twins right next to my house, and it's got me twitchin' to hit the woods and see what else might be out there. :D

Muskies are the alpha, they are something else. I love using a big top lure (like a buck tail) and watching them surface behind it like Jaws.

The bucks are in Velvet right now around here. Once they get out of the herding up mode, I start scouting just to get a feel for were they are at. I took a walk and scoped a few fields the other day and I saw some nice bucks but they were still hanging with the does.

As for women hunters, one of the best hunters I have ever known is a lady. Her deal is Bow hunting for black bear. Her biggest so far was 508 pounds. Her hubby doesn't hunt at all, but he did help us build one of the nicest cabins on her hunting property.

I have never had the chance to go fishing for Muskies but would really like to. They are definately a different breed of fish with a severe ferociousness to them. Plus they get huge. We dont have them around where I am, the closest we have are Pickerel and not quite the same.

I am an avid trout and bass fisher mainly and we do have alot of nice creeks for it around here.

The deer are just starting to get nubs now here and im almost certain 2 nice 11 pointers made it through last year so I have them to look forward to as well as a huge 8. I think this will be a good season as the 3 point rule has been in effect now for 4 years and things are looking up for the rack sizes for sure.

A friend of mine got a 650+ bear 2 years ago that was 8 1/2 Ft tall. It was a monster for this erea. Kudos to the woman you know and its nice to see them out there as well enjoying and harvesting some good animals as well.

I truly have grown up outdoors and started with a little recurve when I was like 8 yrs old and was taught so much from my Father(Stepfather) but hes my Dad. I I truly thank him and every one that hunts and fishes should share the experience with the younger generation. My daughter caught her first Trout 3 years ago and it was a beautiful rainbow about 16 inches in the creek which is a really nice fish there. Ive taken her numerous times bass fishing and she loves it. She enjoys going deer hunting with me but wont drop the hammer on one but shoots a gun and bow both very well. The wife also shoots the bow and she is a great shot as well but is the same way. She did get to see me shoot a couple deer though and it really didnt phase her.

I am a bit odd, I actually prefer doe. Now dont jump on me guys, they just taste better LOL and I cant eat horns so I am not much of a trophy hunter. We did have a nice buck mounted that my hubby took though.

Where we hunted there were always lots of doe, not so many buck, so I would rather leave them. Being the land owner we could get permits to take more if we wanted, but we never did.

Take what you need and no more was another one of my families motto's and it stuck I guess.

Funny how a lot of ladies choose not to hunt. It was and is a normal thing in my family.
Must be how they were tought as a kid I guess. Too bad because they are missing the beauty of a fall day in the woods and the chance for a great dinner.

One of the great moments I had was watching a doe and her 2 fawns for a long time right in front of my blind. It was great!

I wouldnt take her because her fawns were born late and they were still had spots ,to young to be without mama , but it was a great experience to just be there like a fly on the wall.

I waited for them to leave, before I left the blind to head in. It was a great day hunting for me.

I have got to stop rambling on here , sorry for the ramble guys.

I don't think I've met a hunter yet who doesn't get to rambling on once in a while.

I mostly shoot young does as well and I will pass up most bucks unless they are really something else. We have so many deer that last year I could get a doe permit a day for the whole season. I usually take about three a year, unless I have a friend who is really bugging me for venison.

I process all my own meat so I usually end up processing about a dozen or so a year for my friends as well. I really get into making sausage including smoked. All I ask from my friends is that they pay for the freezer wrap, casings and spice packets.

Check out Kent Butcher Supply. This is were I order most of my supplies from.

Kent Butchers' Supply Co.

Once a year they have 50% off sale on their Victorinox Knives. I think eveyone in my familly and friends has gotten some of these for Christmas by now. I would take one of their knives over ten cheap sets anyday. You just can't beat a great knife. It's the perfect gift for anyone. They might get it and go, great another knife. Then they try it and know what it's like to have a premium knife.

mini_art I PMed ya before i checked on this thread. I didn`t know you hunted, that`s too cool. I`d ask you to try, but I know you`d never convince Missy to. Not that she`s against it, it`s just not for her. We do however fish together as she`s probably told you. Lot of great posts everyone, I was hesitant to put this thread out there, but looks like it was a good idea.

I`m with you Brad, I let several nice bucks walk last year, and took several does. I took one buck that I normally wouldn`t have taken, but it was an area that I probably won`t hunt again. He was an 8 just a basket rack. MO has implemented the 4 point antler restriction in most of the northern counties, and WOW! what a difference. Suddenly there taping TV shows in 5 years time. I`m just south of the ARs and was hoping they`d include us this year but they didn`t. Bugs me to see guys shooting forks constantly, but I guess I see both sides. Some of the Archery guys got this elitist attitude as well and will only take 150+ bucks, and don`t take does. So I say as long as it`s legal it`s none of my business, while hoping every year it will be illegal due to ARs. It`s coming though that`s for sure. MO is following the model IL started, and it`s a revenue machine! Looked at the cost of land in Pike Co IL lately? The same thing is happening in Northern MO.

I am pretty much a person that says do what works for you. Especially if your talking about someones first buck with a bow. My first was a six point when I was 12 years old, it's still my favorite.

We have not passed a law yet but there is some talk. I think it would be a good idea. What we have done is gotten most of the land owners to do it on their own. But as you saw, we have a ton of state land. I won't step on state land during gun season, it's gotten crazy. Orange behind every tree, if you do set up a blind someplace close enough so you can get to it after work, you're likely to have some guy from downstate sitting in your blind getting smashed.

Oh boy , dont even get me started on gun season and some jerk getting smashed while hunting,I could rant for a while on that one.

So you like the Victorinox Knives Brad? I took a look at the site but they are not listing prices. Looks like a good knife though. Got any idea of what it is made of , the steel I mean. I could use a set, mine are so old they are worn right down LOL.
Have they got a price list anywhere or ordering page?

yeah i am still sorta young (26) , but i was instilled with safety as a trap shooter before i ever took a gun into the woods.

a few years back i had a shot at a nice chubby doe , but it was a quartering away shot , and tracking a deer shot in the ... , from what i hear , sucks....

hopefully this year ill get to put that 40$ tag to use...

and as for fishing : i think im going to take the summer off... went yesterday to my local pond that was just stocked this spring with bows , and theres lots of fatty carp in there as well ... was back casting the fly rod , and it snapped right at the connection... so i pull out the spinning gear with my only wordens roostertail in watermellon , and get snagged on a damn rock... lost that one , so i called it a day...

i think some night time fly fishing for dinner is in order tomorrow night since im off...
never caught a musky , but i have watched video of them taking off after a lure...

Brad I`m with you completely, don`t know if I cam across that way or not? If it`s legal it`s none of my business. I`m just one who has seen the benefit of ARs, and believe the opposition would be, and has been in the Northern counties short lived. It forces people to keep the doe population in check as well. Honestly I have nothing to complain about as archery tags are $14 for 2 any deer tags, and unlimited doe tags for $7. Where they have implemented ARs there are unlimited rifle tags doe tags for $7 as well as another 10 day doe season that comes with it. That is the part that doesn`t thrill me, as with ML, rifle, and the additional doe season there are close to 30 days of gun pressure. After all I didn`t start out bow hunting and can forget that sometimes forget that sometimes :D :toast:

Ok the heat wave is here the fishing os done for the day, too damn hot out now. I did catch about 10 browns and a rainbow all 8 to 14 inches so all in all is was a good day minus the heat. Might try to hit it again if it decides to cool off a tad.

Hey Mini nothing wrong with a doe, there meat is good and usually alot better then a old buck. I appreciate the meat off a nice yearling doe better then a buck anyday. Although I like to hunt for a rack and cant eat it it is still what I like but meat hunt as well. If the doe are plentiful it is good to weed them out a tad so the ratio of buck to doe get better.
I will be back to write more but need to do a little relaxing. Been a long hot day and need to rest a few.

Happy 4th Of july to all though. Hope the day was great and the enjoyment better

good job on teh fishes , i think they must have migrated to ny then...that explains where they have all been.... the carp are still here though...

i dont recognize the term AR , but im guessing its a limit thing down south...id love to pay 7$ for does... up here its 20$ for your "hunting license" , 20$ for a "deer tag" , which is good for 2 antlered and 1 non , and then you can get another doe tag for 15 or 20$ for up to (i think) 2 more does...

toss in processing and your flat broke , which brings me to the ultimate question :

do you butcher your own deer or pay someone?seems to me butchering wouldnt be that bad...

Sorry,

ARs = Antler Restrictions. In most Northern Mo counties it`s 4 scoreable points on one side. Doesn`t have to be an 8 or more total, just 4 on one side, the other side could be completely broke off, and it would still be legal.

And yeah we are cheap if all I wanted was to go out gun season and take a doe, I could just buy 1 doe tag for $7. Even the non resident tags are much lower than the surrounding states.

I'm with you mini. Antlers make terrible soup. I would never pass a buck if I need meat, but I'd never pass a decent doe waiting on the "monster" to come through. We now have bear season in my area, but I have only seen one male on my land in the spring. It was hanging our near my bow stand, and I really enjoyed watching him. Squirrels are a lot of fun to watch, too.

Hi Firechick,
Nice to meet you :)
Ya bear are fun to watch. We didnt have them on our land, we were just a little to far south for them. They are more prevalent in northern michigan or the upper p.
I am a bit antsy about bear anyway now since my kid got bit by one. The memory gets stuck in your head ya know?
Since I am stuck in Florida for this year I wont be hunting, dont like gators or anacondas much. LOL
I am missing the northern woods already! The deer here are about the size of a german shepard too:(

Hi mini! The bear are just starting to come back. I had never seen one near my place until about 4 years ago until a cub was hit in the road. We used to have a few near Prattsburg, where they would eat from the cans at the pavillion grounds. After the DEC made everyone take their garbage out with them, the bear stopped coming out to easily viewable areas. Only hunters were seeing them.

I certainly hope your child has recovered fully (physically and mentally).

I did hear that southern deer were kind of small compared to what we see up here. Snakes are not my favorite thing and gators near my stand would NOT thrill me.

@Brad- rabbits, pigs, and cows are nice to have, too. I don't have any feeder animals on site anymore, but I buy from a local farmer who does antibiotic free. Best meat you can get!
