I'm not new to vaping, but it's been awhile. I quit smoking years ago (2009 or 2010) using a simple cartridge style ecig. Eventually started smoking again, and then decided enough was enough. Went to a local vape store and picked up an eGO One and a few different kinds of juice.

Months go by, I try different brands of juice, vaping 3mg and 6mg nicotine, but it didn't matter what I tried, I would get terrible coughing fits, and I would feel a terrible tickle in my throat. So bad that I nearly threw up on numerous occasions. I stopped using the ecig altogether because I just couldn't take the coughing.

I would like to pick up vaping again, so that I can refrain from smoking, but I'm concerned that I'm going to again spend hundreds on tanks and juice and whatnot, only to have the same thing happen.

What are some recommendations for things I could try? I'm afraid I don't remember the VG/PG ratio of the juices I was using, or even the brand (other than a couple flavors of Jay Mewe's juice) and I've tossed everything since then. This was over a year ago.

I want an ecig that will actually stand up on it's own when I put it down (which the eGo sucked at), quality tanks, and quality juice. But I'm so out of the loop now that I don't know where to start or if maybe my body just no longer tolerates vaping?

I tried direct hits and holding the vapor in my mouth first. Didn't make a difference.

The Ego ONE is not variable voltage/wattage right? Maybe pick up something you can turn down. Sorry I don't have any recommendations for specific gear, I'm not up on what's currently available.

Northern NJ native , Coastal NC now.
I have noticed at times that when i take a hit that i immediately exhale because of shortness of breath but it's rare .

I turn the wattage down as Lessifer says to do and it's all good again. I go up again after a few minutes and no more issues , i wouldn't worry about it unless it happens every time then just lower the power for awhile or keep it down if you feel the need to.

The ego isn't adjustable for wattage/voltage. There's the option of .5 Ohm and 1 Ohm coils, but that's it in terms of adjustment.

I tried both coils, but it didn't make a difference.

The ego is the most "advanced" ecig I've used, so I don't even know where to start for finding one that is adjustable.

I've never had shortness of breath, but drawing in the vapor would very frequently result in a coughing fit. Not a few "clear my throat" coughs, but several minutes of "NOW I can't catch my breath" coughing.

Perhaps trying a Nautilus mini with 1.6 or 1.8 coils on an iStick 40w? The draw is restrictive, but you do get some decent vapor. Your body just may not be able to handle large amounts of vapor at one time. I know for myself, I don't sub-ohm because it's just to much for me personally. There is something out there for you that's perfect. It's just finding what works for you. :)

Thanks. I was using the Triton Aspire, it leaked constantly. What are the odds I'd like the Nautilus mini if I didn't like the Triton?

I use a couple Nautilus minis daily and have never had one leak on me. Might be worth a try.
Might as well. I did like how tough the Triton was. That stupid eGo was constantly falling over, so that tank took a lot of abuse. Aside from the aforementioned leakage, I had no other issues with it.

As long as it was the Triton, not the Triton Mini, you were using, the Nautilus (and Nautilus Mini) are very different. The Triton's an odd one because the Triton and Triton Mini aren't anything alike and use different coils. The Triton Mini is similar to the Nautilus line and uses the same coils.

The Triton (not Mini) is generally a sub-ohm tank. The Nautilus and the Triton Mini are MTL tanks. They use smaller, higher-resistance coils that you'd vape at lower wattages. They produce less vapor which is why they might help with the coughing. They also happen to be much less likely to leak.

If you decide to go with a Nautilus line tank, you might want to try the Triton Mini or the Nautilus 2. They're more recent, top-fill versions of the Nautilus and Nautilus Mini.

Good luck!

DW82, welcome to ECF.

If you think it could be the juice that's making you cough, HHV (Heather's Heavenly Vapes) has a light NET that might work for you called Heavenly Army. Quote from their description: "It's an extracted tobacco that is lightweight and creamy with a nice tobacco undertone."

Welcome and glad you joined. Mouth to lung inhale is less iratating than an inhale directly to the lungs.
Might want to try the search function in upper right hand corner of this post. Could type in " how to stop coughing".
4. Coughing
Probably the most common symptom of tobacco smoking cessation, along with sputum / phlegm production. The severity and duration may depend on how heavy a smoker you were before switching, and how many cigarettes are smoked while transitioning to vaping.

As to equipment, for years, I like the Eleaf Isticks with the built in batteries and RDA's around 1.5-2 ohms single A1 coil.

I know you said you tried holding the vape in your mouth, but have you actually tried to do this? Take a vape and hold it in your mouth, while it's in your mouth, puff out your checks (like the face you see when someone is holding their breath till they are blue in the face). I think this adds more volume of space to dilute the vapor, then hold the vapor for 3 to 4 seconds, then inhale to lungs. i know this probably will look silly but it actually worked for me when I started. I was a heavy smoker and started at 24mg nic and couldn't believe that a measly bit of vapor could make me cough when cigarette smoke didnt. Anyways that inhale worked for me (although I still coughed slightly sometimes, but bearable ) and after a week or two I had gotten use to the vapor and the rest is history.
