I am currently living in NYC but want to move out to the West Coast preferably San Diego. However I've been reading about these extreme smoking bans which now include vaping.

How are things working out ? Has this caused neighbors to rat each other out ? What about legal {OTHER STUFF}. Can you vape that with a card or is that now an issue ?

I'd love to hear about some first hand accounts.

As I was researching I noticed that vaping is not allowed on the street in Manhattan Beach but breathing exhaust fumes from cars is.

This is all so crazy.

I live about 45 min outside of Los Angeles and vaping is basically treated like smoking here. And their are many rules for smoking. No vaping inside any establishments, vape in designated smoking areas only. Use common since. And all they will do is warn you basically if your vaping in a non smoking area. I've not seen it go farther than that. Of course once your warned you better listen or you could quite possibly get a fine. However you will usually always be warned first. Basically they treat vaping exactly the same as smoking which California is pretty strict with. I'm used to it. I've lived here my whole life. Same rules go for San Diego. So just follow the rules and you will be fine. Sadly their tolerance toward vaping, is the same as smoking. Pretty much no tolerance in public places with the exception of designatedays smoking areas. And word to the wise, don't even try vaping in a restaurant or bar, it won't fly. They will snatched you up so fast. Sadly you will need to go to the smoking areas. We in California can't smoke in bars, can't vape either, but there will be designated areas which you can go, outside, where it's allowed. Hope this helps. This comes from experience, I've lived in southern California my whole life. By the way, you will love it here! So warm and sunny with lots of Palm trees! Welcome and hope this helps you out. I visited NY once and it was summer and I was freezing there! Get ready for some sun!! Best wishes! :)

Ummmm... not this Gulf coast Florida grown vet and ol' fart! I visited S Kali (LA/Norwalk area) prior to my sojourns o'er da Pacific back in '66 & '67. The only good experience was my buddy introducing me to tacos and burritos! Oh, and got to see da Byrds live...

BTW, it was warm and sunny with da palm trees in da Philippines and 'Nam also!

If anyone cherishes their freedom and wallet contents, don't move to da left coast... just a lil' warning!

realsis is right, vaping in LA is treated like smoking. Which is unfortunate. I've lived here all my life and watched the smoking laws change from fairly open to extremely strict. I actually got a ticket in Burbank for smoking outside. They had signs up, but I did not see them. They were way up on light posts on the side of the street and looked like no parking signs, so I paid them no attention. No warning, no break (even though I don't live in that area), just a very expensive ticket. And an extra fee for the privilege of paying my ticket online. I'm not bitter.

Businesses can also retain their right to restrict smoking. Universal Studios, for example, is a non smoking establishment. If you want a smoke you go outside of the park. But this can be true anywhere, not just LA.

I realize these are smoking examples I'm using, but I am doing so to demonstrate that this is how Vapers are treated as well. The rule is, if you can't smoke there, you can't Vape there.

It's California ... everything is either mandatory or forbidden. What did you expect?

I knew one guy who got fined for smoking in the cab of his own truck as an owner operator. They said it was 'smoking in the workplace'.

Nope, not living there again, no way, no how. I'll commute from Tahoe before living in Cali again.

I've heard this several times.

I grew up a Native NY'er during the 70's. The new NY is very different and I will never get accustomed to it. However people tell me California is just as bad.

I don't know if this type of ban would work in NYC. You have people paying sometimes up to $8k a month on a rental. You can't tell a finance guy that he can't smoke a cigar or have his vape at night.

However in California it seems like most people who don't own private homes are economically challenged and are at the mercy of these strict rules. It's not fair.

I just fear going to Cali and all this becomes a huge issue with neighbors ringing my doorbell etc. I would go nuts and it would affect me too negatively.

I am seriously considering not going to Cali but I hate NYC with a passion.

Dilemmas !

I also live in Cali and haven't had much of an issue vaping outdoors. In my area we have probably as many vape shops as we have Starbucks. There are some of the stealth only vape signs featuring the analog with a red slash thru it but that's merely an obstacle. What I do fear, however is our state loves to tax and spend and we will be one of the first to be taxed. San Diego is beautiful. If I had a chance to relocate there it would take me about a second to jump on it.

I grew up in San Diego, and now live in one of the North County coastal communities outside of San Diego proper.
They are passing vaping bans all over the place around here.

Having said that, San Diego is still the best city in the world in my opinion.
I've spent a lot of time trying to find somewhere to move, and nothing comes close.

But for me, it's all about the weather.
And there is no lack for things to do in these parts, that's for sure.
:)

Pretty soon the vaping bans will be everywhere anyway, so I wouldn't let that stop you.

I stealth vape everywhere, because I have no other choice really.
I've never been caught, and I'm sure I never will be.

Someday I am going to exercise a little bit of civil disobedience and have a vaping picnic with my wife in the middle of the UCSD campus.
You'll probably see me on the news getting tased by the campus police.

So odd that sd was very forgiving on lots of stuff, drinking beer from a can and having the can collectors pickem up with no issue with the law in 96?Sd is a great city havent been since 98, and even then smoking was only on patio bars mostly in OB, and a few in PB.Florida seems more lenient but not on anything else, good luck.

One of my "I quit smoking" endeavors ended back in the mid-80s when I moved to the SF Bay Area. People were so militant about smoking that I started again just because it made me mad (hey any excuse in a storm!). I used to say you were better off being a pedophile or mass murderer than a smoker there.

I am SoCal born and raised and now living in Fla. Simply put, Cali now sucks. It has become the premiere nanny state. "The government will take care of us so we don't have to make any decisions for ourselves." It's also one of the most expensive places to live, second only to New York I believe. I'm flying out to Northern Cali on Saturday to visit my sister, so I'm curious to see how militant it is up there.....

Nah, do it in front of the Theodore Geisel libary. He'd appreciate the gesture.

Lived in San Diego county for almost 12 years. Beautiful, beautiful place. Going to visit again for Comic Con this summer. Might even spend summers there if I teach.

But I would rather work fast food or washing cars than live there again. No way. Especially because I remember when you could smoke, eat, drink, or, well, as some friends of mine did, have a mini-concert, complete with double-bass, on the center meridian of the 163 freeway.

It's just not the same now.

Are you a 70's / 80's Kid ?

I can't get used to the new school. How can you live somewhere that has completely stripped itself of everything you enjoyed when you were younger ?

Welcome To NYC 2014.

It's a painful reality.

Not quite. Moved there in 89-90, something like that. But my ex grew up there and even when I got there it was still pretty laid back. Graduated from SDSU in 1994. Yeah, even then it as very different from today. Other than the amazing weather, might as well be a different city. Oh well, as my current spouse puts it, "California would be great without the Californians."

But I moved when I lost my job with the dot com bust and wandered around the country a bit. Ended up landing in Reno Nevada, (by way of Baltimore MD) of all places. Close enough to Cali to enjoy the goodies from the Bay Area if I really want without the headaches.

At this point, if I can, I'd really like to stay just where I am. We're getting a ton of high tech and startups from Cali, the weather isn't awful, (I miss green though) and the stupid tax means, well, we tend to tax the stupid out of the region. The traditional businesses in the area have very low tolerance for coddling the stupid. All four, ranching, mining, gambling and prostitution, will wreck your life if not kill you if you're not an adult and use your brain when dealing with them.

Compared to those four, vaping is nothing. You're far, far more likely to get killed working with cattle and horses than smoking cigarettes, much less vaping.
