Vaping in my company banned (I think because of me)

I feel fortunate and am graciously thankful for how vaping is understood in my workplace. I work for a small business consisting of 5 employees (4 of us smokers) which involves helping public customers in front area of store but also technical work in back in a separate area. The owner of the business did not like the fact when when went out for a smoke break how we smelled and carried that smell when we came back in, especially with the lingering smell while helping customers. Within a couple days after I started vaping I talked to the owner and explained vaping and what it was all about. Not only did the owner give me permission to vape while at work as long as it is out of the view of customers, the owner also gave us an incentive of a one time $100 reimbursement vaping expenditure to only vape and not smoke during work hours. Done by contract, if we were seen smoking during business hours that $100 reimbursement would be taken out of a paycheck if caught smoking.

Of 5 employees 3 out of 4 of us are now full time vapers, at work and away from work.

What I would highly recommend before vaping at work is to talk to supervisors or business owner about it rather than hide it. Hiding something would make it seem like it's something that's wrong to do, which makes it seem unacceptable. If your fortunate enough to work for someone understanding who would take the time to listen and have the benefits of vaping provided to them, it can only benefit you - and the business IMHO. Think about how you present it to them before you do .... ex. "No offensive smoke smell", "Productivity in the workplace with vaping is benefited because your taking less breaks and walking away from what you are doing less often.", "Vapor exhaled into the air is harmless and is not smoke", and some web links of interest to back up your claims so they can do their own research if they are inclined to. This of course is something that all employees should be aware of , especially if they are non smokers. The owner of this business is not a smoker, as well as another employee. I personally find it disturbing how sometimes people can think something is bad, but yet know nothing about it.

The job has its ups and down, but I believe most all do. This is a great benefit where I work and am grateful for it and how vaping has caused improvements in all areas of my life. I was a smoker for 30 years - vaping 8 months now and have not touched 1 cigarette in that time.

Today I brought my big azz provari to work with me for the first time. It was great. My egos stayed in my jacket on the coat hanger all day.
Woot woot!

It bothers me a lot that so many companies are banning ecigs without bothering to understand it. They seem to believe that it's roughly the equivalent of smoking. There is a LOT of misinformation out there and most people are too lazy to bother doing their research. I guess it's up to US to educate and for that, we have not only ourselves but CASAA. We need to get a lot louder to drown out the screeching of the anti's.

I already know that I can't vape indoors where I work at the bowling center (suck job, don't ask!). There have already been two occasions where people were vaping, and the manager put a stop to it. The rule is 'No Smoking' and he sees smoke... I'm not sure he understands that it's not really smoke, but vapor, but I don't think that's the main sticking point. I think it's more that if other customers see it, they'll start talking and griping because they're clueless, and it's just a giant headache.

This is the same place where customers complained when they saw me rolling my own cigarettes, and thought they were joints.

Tomorrow is my first day taking my vape to work, and I'm a little nervous about it - the vape juice I have is too low on the nic content to sate my cravings, so I've been hitting pretty regularly on it all day, and even had a couple analogs to get over the rough patches. Can I get by with only my 3-4 smoke breaks, or will I have to sneak into the bathroom to vape between times? Only time will tell.

That is usually the real issue, working in public view. This day and age people look at bad before good and thrive on making an issue of things they simply feel they should not have to understand, its just easier for lazy ignorant people to make it unacceptable than to learn why it should be accepted. Ignorance is bliss?

I feel bad for the younger generation, because in most cases its the older generation of lazy people that got away with doing what THEY later decided was bad just because it MIMICS what they did and have ruined it for those who actually care to understand. Today this pertains to more than just vaping, and it's just really sad.

I've made mistakes growing up, sometimes more than once. I've learned to accept my mistakes and learn from them and move on. I have three children that will grow by making mistakes, I can help them overcome them with guidance from my past experiences. Evolution has given way to degenerates. As a race we are to learn from past mistakes and improve on them.....not ignore them.....because they just simply can not be, everyone makes mistakes.....we are human after all.

it's not always the decision makers that write these rules, it's often because Sue in accounting doesn't like it and .....ed to enough people in private to have the handbook changed. i used to be able to bring my dog to work on fridays, and he'd sit in my office all day without barking or causing trouble, with full approval from the company's owners...then someone on the first floor started blaming their sneezing on the dog being in the building, which is like 15000 square feet, and i was told i couldn't bring the dog in anymore because of this. i accepted it, and thanked the owners for letting me bring the dog in for the previous year. some people will ..... about anything, and if you want to succeed in the corporate environment, you need to learn to pick your battles, and step on as few toes as possible.

You are right. It could be either or both. I bet there were a majority of people who you worked with who would rather spend the day with you and your dog than the person on the first floor. Some people just can't stand to see anyone being different than the "norm". Life would be so much nicer if more people were like our dogs instead of like so many petty people. FYI, there is no way that a person on the first floor of a 15,000 ft building is being affected by your dog. (I use to do commercial building construction/renovation)

Good points. I hope everyone reading this thread are already members of CASAA or are going to join CASAA today.

I'm fairly fortunate in this regard. When I was hired, my boss told me I could smoke in the shop but a week later reneged due to his own health issues, which he failed to inform me of. That's cool; I entirely get it. Outdoor smoking is now the rule. However, now that I'm analog-free and gave him the info on vaping, he's cool with me doing so in the shop.

On my end of it, not only can I vape while I work but am also more productive as a result. I don't have nic fits to distract me while enduring that eternity between break times.

I'm at work right now vaping away.. luckily no one is here on weekends lol

during the normal business week I have to stealth vape.. i work for a big Insurance company and while there is nothing listed in their handbook about e-cigs (I checked) they are very 'Corporate' and assume they would be against it if I was a little too open about it.

All my work buddies know I do it.. I usually just blow the vapor under my desk... I also go outside with a few of the non-converters still while they poke fun on my vaping addiction.
