Mid, glad to hear the stress is aleaved

Ducky, your duck might have a sinus problem, I have problems with my ears and nose and water that causes me to act like that. Just brainstorming, I know nothing about ducks, but sounds like me when water jacks up my system

As everyone knows or at least suspects that I have ducks :) One of my ducks has been clumsy, and I figured he was growing and just a little clumsy. About a month ago one of my chicken jumped on him and started pecking him. Of course I babied him....but about 2 weeks ago he started to become clumsier, and now he is so off balance thst he cannot climb hills or even walk balanced. I realized that the chickens have been picking on him and they have injured him...... so I have been babying him and carrying him out to play in the pond in the morning, drying him off, and then holding him while he cleans and oils himself. He cannot balance himself to clean and oil himself without falling. Then I have to put him in a pen to keep him safe, and I am hoping that he will get better. It breaks my heart.....I know that to many people they think "it is just a duck" but I raised them from not even a day old. I do not have kids so I guess my animals fill that spot in. If anyone has any suggestions let me know :)

Sounds like some sort if chemicals imbalance ...not sure what can be done to make it better

Good morning!

Midniteoyl, hang in there--our thoughts are with you and your wife.
Ducklady, I wish I had even the faintest clue about ducks. Can he float on water without capsizing? Maybe he could get more comfortable there...?

He definitely can float in water still, but ducks come out after a while. He also has trouble oiling himself, but I have been helping him balance himself to oil himself. Without oil his feathers will not repel water and he gets cold in the water and the water will weigh him down. Him and the girl duck played in the pond this morning from 7:30 to 11 lol, then I watched him and her hunt around until 1:40pm. I had things I had to do so I put him in the pin around 1:40 and the hen is out there laying outside of it . It makes me so sad, because I do not believe in pinning animals up....but if I do not he falls on his back and cannot get back up and the chickens see him as weak and they pick on him. I am hoping that whatever is hurt on him will heal if I baby him enough.

I thought that but he did not start falling until one of the chickens jumped on his back and started pecking him (I know it sounds awful...and it is....they are as*holes to the Ducks) All ducks are a little clumsy when they are developing. I did not know that the chickens had been jumping on him besides the first time. I really think that they have injured him. I do not think anything is broke on him. He eats and drinks and plays in the water just fine. I absolutely hate he is that way! I just do not know what to do. It is hard to find an Avian Vet, and plus my bf will not want to pay God knows what for a duck....if it was our dog or cat they would have already been to the vet. The duck is not in any kind of pain from what I can tell. He lets me move his wings, feel around on his legs, feet, mid section, and tail. when he walks he limps and he acts like his tail is not doing its part to balance him. I really hope he gets better.

If he limps and/or does not use his tail properly, perhaps a broken bone somewhere? How long has this been going on?

He can shake his tail (ducks shake their tail often; such as when they get out of the water) Him having trouble walking has been going on for about a week. I just started pinning him up a couple days now. It is helping, or so it seems. I figure that if he has an injury then watching him constantly and catching him before he falls and pinning him up to make him rest and keep him safe from the chickens should help him recover. I did not see anything on or wrong woth his feet and legs, so I wonder if he limps because he is off balance. He ealks awkward to balance himself. I am almost positive that the chickens have caused his off balance...I really hate seeing him like this...he is such a sweetheart.

I know how you feel Joan. I've tried to nurse so any poor little animals back to health, and it really is heartbreaking to see them when they aren't well.

Joan, did you try a duck forum? There must be one, there are forums for almost everything. Try some google searches.

Oh and I'm sorry to hear about your duck WV, definitely sounds to me like some sort of inner ear problem, but of course I don't really know anything about that sort of thing.

It is terrible....I hate when I have a sick or hurt animal. I feel helpless in a way, because I just want to snap my fingers and little Duddles be better. It sucks. He just stumbles and falls and tips forward and backward...he tries so hard to catch himself...and alot of the time he succeeds. Then he will lay down and rest in the yard, and I have this rhode island red that has always been a total sweetheart (she is the lowest on the pecking order) and she sees him as weak and someone she can pick on since she has never had anyone to pick on, and she jumps on him and pecks his head or wherever. It makes me so mad!! Then some of the other chickens join in on pecking him..its terrible!! So I have to pin him up until he gets better or he never will. I let him run around most of the day watching him but it kills me to seperate him from the hen and take away his freedom.

I researched everywhere and could not find anything except diseases and amgel wing disorder. At first I thought maybe he had what they call (and I am not being disrespectful using this word, but it is what they call it) "......ed leg" b7t everythi g looks normal. Then I found out that the chickens had been attacking him (literally jumping on top of him). I only knew of that one time when he was younger and them chasing him (I stopped them when I saw them chasing him and the time I saw it get jumped on). I had no idea they had been attacking him regurlarly. I geel so bad and guilty for not knowing, because I know that if I had he would not be hurt like he is. I have tried so long to get a drake, and I have slways been given hens, and my first drake gets messed up! It infuriates me. Those chickens are so lucky that I am such an animal lover of all animals because I swear if I was not......

Another thought came to me (not that I know much of anything about ducks): could it be a joint in the leg? If a chicken jumped on top of him, it could have damaged the equivalent of a knee or an ankle--making the leg seem like it's not broken and usable, but unable to put any weight on it.

I know there are various chicken/duck forums, maybe backyard fowl? I'll try to ask a friend who is very involved with chickens (many of them have ducks too). They even have their own doggie door. LOL! I don't know where you are in the country, but I ran across an alert that Calif's results were all positive for West Nile this year (chickens are immune, the antibodies just show in their bloodwork). I don't know what the signs are. I do know the greatest danger at one time was the native bird population and not so much domesticated birds (I used to raise exotics - Lories specifically). But I will definatley ask my friend tonight because finding a good forum (like ECF) is your best bet for info.

One other option might be to check with the county extension website. There should be links to the veternarian site and often they will list if there are any 'nasties' as far as illness detected in the county or state (state vets have a list too, but ours isn't as informative).

I would think if there's a physical injury, that you'd see or detect it with a specific spot, as in the leg. It seems with the imbalance that something internal is going on. Keeping him seperate seems like a good idea for sure. I hate it when my animals show illness. I'd much rather be sick than them. At least I can communicate what's going on. That's so stressful.

I didn't know chickens were so "cruel". LOL! I used to have parakeets and cockateils that I'd have to watch because the parakeets were so much smarter that they'd take advantage of the cocketeils; like going for "free" rides on their tails (cause them to scream and run). Kids that never grow up.

I'm thinking he has a defect and the chickens sensed that from the start.

There is a chance that it could be..... the thing about the avian species is that if they are hurt they will sometimes hide it, because it is their natural instinct to hide an injury.

Wow! Thanks! That would be so cool! If you have anything you need ro ask me if they need to know details pm me :)

My boyfriend thinks that it is a combination of him in the process of growing (he is awkward right now, because he is growing. He looks unproportionate, his legs are really long, his body is long, and his breasts are big.) and the chickens attacking him. He thinks the duck is just bruised up......and I hope he is right.

Chickens can be buttholes sometimes! Lol chickens have what many call a Pecking Order. The Pecking Order consists of at the very top: The Boss hen- she is the boss, she is allowed to peck every chicken in the flock and she gets first dibs on everything, and no other chicken can peck her, and then it goes down the line all the way to the lowest chicken of the pecking order, and every chicken can peck her and she gets to peck nobody.
I have had ducks with chickens and they normally do not bother the ducks this much. last year I had 2 ducks and 1 disappeared, the one duck that did not disappear started flocking with the chickens! It was funny! I really think she thought she was a chicken lol she was my favorite duck :)

I love birds! I had a cocketeil named Tweety, and he was so funny...and grumpy! He was mistreated before I got him. I got him before I was in the 6th grade and had him until I was 25. He died last year on April 4. He was already 2 or 4 when I got him. So he was 17 or 19 when he died. I still miss him sometimes. He loved whistling the andy Griffith song...lol He knew it before I got him. He used to stare in his mirror say pretty over and over to himself and say pretty bird a lot too. He also whistled you are my sunshine.
