back in the early days when we were scarce, sure sometimes if they were actually near me i would start up a conversation (i wouldn't go out of my way to go up to them though) but, now that we are pretty much mainstream in my state and i am over the newbie having to find other ecig users phase, nope i don't bother other vapers but, do give them a smile if they are looking my way.. If they came up to me like you did to the guy though, i would be a bit nicer about it but, as a long time vaper, i can understand dude not wanting to chitchat with you, there are times when you kinda get tired of being bothered about your vape especially if you are a long time vaper...i got that way around my 3rd yr of vaping when it was starting to become more popular, the endless questions started driving me nuts, even more so when i would sometimes see the same people still smoking cause their ecigs stunk and they didn't bother taking my advice/recommendations to use something else!
I find the conversations usually started with What the Heck is that?

Few years ago I went into the city. Saw some guy lounging in a doorway outside Grand Central, vaping. I walked up pulling out my mod and said "Hey there, whatcha using?" He said something or other, I think it was a juice flavor, then turned away. I spend enough time in the city to know better.
Another time my family was in Baltimore and our waitress at the Hard Rock Cafe had a mod in her blouse pocket, when I brought out mine she sat down and chatted for a few minutes, got some pics, etc. Turns out it was a blinged out pink Subox.
For the most part, I just do the Mod Nod, or exchange smoke signals from car windows.

You're a gem.I talked to one bloke about it and a few people in B&M but welll. Things like this kind of bug me, my friend drove a beetle and all other beetle drivers would flash their lights at him like ooh snap we are in the same club. Same with a friend who drove a mini. Really annoys me for some reason. So no i don't want to give anyone a nod
Around here half of them can't tell you what their gear is and the other half aren't interested in anything you can't vape at 200+ watts. You can find a few people to chat with in certain shops.
