One terminal of the switch is connected to the battery positive. Everything else that would normally connect to the battery instead connects to the other terminal of the switch. If you want to measure the voltage of the battery, connect the voltmeter negative terminal of the meter to the battery negative and the positive to the switch terminal where everything else connects.



Edit: although that would require a switch that can take the full current that you'll be pulling from the battery. The diagram below from gandymarsh shows how to do it with a MOSFET and only needs a small switch.
