It will be interesting to see the date code when someone unwraps a new one... but they certainly might be new. Some of the high end Ingersol (and others) cordless drills are still coming with VTC5s in their battery packs. E-Bike guys say they are still pulling VTC5s from a cordless leaf blower (Ego-Power maybe?) battery pack and at least one high-end European cordless drill.
I do not believe VTC5s are not in production. And, yes. I've seen the email response a few folks got back from Sony... The fact is, Sony never intended them for end users. They intend them for cordless tool battery packs. Sony views what we do with them as a liability.
I can't link to the video on ECF because there's some bad language in it, but search for plumesofhazard episode 31 on youtube. When you find the video, drag the bar over to an hour five (1:05). The relevant part starts right around that time.
I personally have something of a love/hate relationship with my VTC5s. Two out of the three I bought from the last batch started leaking right about 100 charge cycles. The good thing is the light green wrapper shows it when it happens. The bad thing is that I figure they shouldn't have leaked. I have no idea if they were handled roughly somewhere along the line or if they were defective or any number of other possibilities and it makes me hesitate when I consider buying more....
But I do desire to have more of them because they are the only batt I've found that suits my vaping perfectly. I get exactly one day out of them. Every morning before I leave, I change batts. I like my set up from full charge down to 3.6. My VTC5s are always 3.59-3.62 every single time. 5.5ml per day and running a .55 ohm dual coil RM3 never pushes the batts anywhere near their potential, but the capacity and discharge rate works out perfectly for how I vape. I like them.
