found this out there and wondered if its usable in a vv device for our needs?

500mA max on that chip. Really your going to want something around 2 amps at a minimum 3 amps is more ideal.

I looked into that as well but you would need this to handle what we need. It is a nice little piece though, just too pricey compared to getting separate components.

Not that pricey, unless of course your labor is only worth about $3/hour. Finding/ordering the right components, paying multiple shipping costs, and then hoping you've got it right.

This is also a nice touch.
