We are about to begin an intensive systems upgrade at 1:00 AM EST. The website will be down during this time. If all goes as planned it will be back up at 3:00AM EST.
We are upgrading our server, shopping cart and look... however the look will not change for about another week. The looking is changing to be more informational friendly.
That seems to be the case with any software of quality. I manage very robust active directory environment (think 43,000 users, 110 countries and 400 domain controllers). Its a well developed architecture that is near bullet proof. When something does go wrong though ... ouchie. Are you guys on community or enterprise (or is that TMI)?
"You can let them know that we already tested and worked out kinks in the upgrade, just had to take it down to repeat the process on the live site. As it is a major overhaul, it may take a bit of time to do the process. But moving forward upgrades should be relatively simple and shouldn't see too much of a downtime."

Depends on what you mean by expensive.
Magento costs 590 dollars but it's a complete suite and secure enough for businesses like that.
Large systems may cost a few thousands but i think they are useless and high maintenance for these applications.
