Kinda comparing apples and oranges but....
Im getting a pretty harsh hit with my protank2 and 12mg juice. When I say harsh, I dont mean alot of vapour-hard to inhale type harsh. I mean really irritating my throat harsh....its like a dry inhale almost.....kinda like a fine tip hitting the back of my throat and feels dry....really far from smooth....even with 100VG juice.
A similar resistance coil (0.2ohms difference) with the exact same juice in my kfun clone is exponentially smoother. The hit is still hard but a completely different hard. Its like inhaling a strong cigarette on the clone vs inhaling a burning piece of paper on the protank.
Ive built and rebuilt diff resistance coils on the PT2 but for the life of me cannot get rid of that feeling. Im using cotton in both heads.
Are these RBA genesis atomizers really that much better? What on earth could I do to the PT2 to get a smoother vape? Add thicker cotton maybe? Id really like to get this sorted as the protank2 is a much more portable solution for work and on the go....whereas the kfun clone is a beast weighing in at just over a tonne.
Any insight or advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

It does sound like a dry hit... I'm not using cotton but read that some are turning the silicone cup (sitting above the wicks) upside down to improve juice flow to the wicks. Also read that too much cotton can choke flow when it expands with moisture. Are your wicks clean? I'm seen issue with poor wicking where thickened or cooked juice blocks flow. Thickened can be removed with running water, cooked requires a dry burn. Hopefully this might help a little. If you have an extra head, try that to see if that makes a difference. Good luck.

Did you just recently get your Protank, or are you using heads that were purchased recently? I've seen a lot of people posting about issues with the more recently made coils, and some folks are thinking it's a quality control issue with the stock heads.

I've been using the same handful of heads in regular rotation, since I've been rebuilding mine. I've had pretty good success with microcoils and either cotton or 2-2.5mm silica. (Cotton is my preference now, but it can be finicky).

And like LoveVanilla posted, it definitely sounds like a dry hit. You mentioned that you're rebuilding your heads, too - what is the resistance of the coils coming out to, and what are you using for wick?

Just a fyi but the kayfun is not a genesis RBA. But yeah.... a kayfun blows away finicky clearomizers. The flavor is leaps above a properly working protank.

Pro tanks are finicky to say the least, At least the months I have spent fighting them.

First of all every pro tank I own and I have had every one of them, they all mute flavor very bad, I mean make juice i love taste like nothing. The stock silica wicks seem to do that.

Second they do not wick well with VG heavy juice, anything over 70pg/30vg i find wicks bad and the stock heads need some tweaking to work with 50pg/50vg or 30pg/70vg, I would remove one or at 100%vg removed both top laying silica wicks to help with proper wicking.

Third the stock heads/coils are hit and miss, you could buy 10 of them and half wouldnt work well, ever!

So Some tweaking is needed for sure and so i learned how to re-coil them and use cotton wick instead of silica. It can seem hard at first but its real easy and the performance is like a whole new tank system. In fact I wouldnt even be using my pro tanks now if it were not for the re-coils and cotton wick I do myself, they would be collecting dust in a corner otherwise. I have a pro tank 2 with a 1.2ohm coil that I run and it hits with thick strong vapor production and a lot of flavor too. I also run a pro tank Mini 2 with a 1.8ohm coil that I have used for over three months, going in every week or so and replacing the cotton leaving the 1.8 coil to keep vaping on. I have a few 2ohm coils that run well at like 5volts also but thats whats nice about recoiling them yourself, you can tailor them to your liking.

I dont use my pro tanks very often anymore but I can always count of them now that I have re-coiled and re-wicked them myself. They make a nice back up and now that my son has quit smoking and joined me vaping he is now getting great use out of them too.

Its not a dry hit. Im getting lots of vapor. Wicks are clean and when I check it, its saturated in juice.
Ive had the heads and tank since december....regardless, ive rebuilt using 32, 30 & 28ga kanthal. Resistance is low....1.3 to 1.8
with a short, wouldnt it not fire?
I will have a look at the insulator.
Im using it mainly with ego c twist and evod vv....however, I get the same vape on my evic through all available watt settings.
Curve ball: same juice in mini vivi nova (1.8 cotton) has lots of flavour but zero throat hit.
6mg juice reduces the harsh hit but then throat hit is barely noticeable.
Argh.....
Is that the effect of stepping up nic levels? Does the TH become as ive described?

I should do a video of my ProTank rebuilds... I hated it when I first got it, but after following bits and pieces of advice from all over this forum, I finally got the perfect configuration and they work amazingly well.

One difference may be that I have a ProTank3, but use standard ProTank heads, yes they fit (single coil). I also use these heads in my Anyvape Davide BCC and get even better results.

First, I take the whole thing apart, yank the wicks and coil ant throw them as far as I possibly can.

Then, I prepare a 1.8-2ohm microcoil with 30ga kanthal on a 1/16 drill bit. 28 heats too slowly, and 32 is too brittle. 30 is just right. I pop it together, measure the resistance, and pulse to get it glowing evenly, pinching and tweaking it with tweezers until it's as close to perfect as I can get it.

I loosely fill it with organic cotton ball. Loosely is the key, as it will expand when it gets wet. Then.. I snip a piece of cotton yarn (Sugar and Cream) unravel it, and lay three strands across the top.

Put a drop or two of the juice you are going to use on the center of the wick and put the chimney back on. Snip the ends so that they are as wide as the base; no longer, no shorter.

Put the rubber grommet back on... install and vape away!!!

With this build I have not had a dry hit, gurgle or leak in two months of using it daily.
