What are the advantages of a high-amp battery?

I see a lot of talk lately about high-amp batteries here on ECF.

Usually they seem to be associated with sub-ohm vaping.

Can someone please explain how this helps, especially when it comes
to the vaping experience?

I am not yet to the point of sub-ohming (??), but, is there some
advantage to using high amp batteries with clearos, cartomizers, or atties?

with normal vaping like a clearo or carto or on a regulated device you dont need a high amp battery. they are mainly used with mechanical mods and on sub ohm builds. lets say that you are running a .5 ohm coil at 4.2 volts, you will be drawing 35.28 watts and 8.4 amps. normal batteries are only designed to handle around 8-10 amps. you would really be stressing you battery and probably cause the battery to go into thermal runaway. which could be really bad. i would suggest doing a lot of reading and research before you begin building coils. and even more research before attempting a sub ohm build.

No advantage of high amp batteries for common everyday resistance juice attachments.

The issue with sub-ohm coils (less than 1.0 ohms) is the lower the ohm the higher the amps it will draw from the battery used. The battery will try to give the coil what it has, and if the demand is more than it can give, it reacts by over-heating and self-destructing internally. This event is called thermal runaway, and depending upon the battery chemistry it can mean as little as simple venting of gas on up to flames or explosion. Not something you want to happen with a device that is a couple of inches from your face.

A typical high drain IMR battery will have a 10 amp continuous discharge rate. These batteries can temporarily handle a 0.5 sub ohm coil with 8.4 amps, but drop the ohm to 0.4 and the coil will pull 10.5 amps. Drop it to 0.3 and it jumps to 14 amps.

With sub ohm builds you want as much margin of safety as possible because coil resistance can change without knowing it. A higher amp IMR or hybrid battery will have between 20 - 30 amps in reserve which provides a much higher margin of safety against battery failure and thermal runaway.

High amp batteries are either IMR's or a hybrid design and have a safer chemistry than Li-ion batteries. To put it simply even when they go bad they more like the just burn instead of exploding as Li-ion batteries can do. They are now recommended for all mods. They also don't have protection circuits and rely on a safer chemistry instead. That does not mean all unprotected batteries have safe chemistry.
