Hmmm for those who are using the green bag cotton ball from walgreens, uhh the cotton balls are "whitened with hydrogen peroxide". Wouldn't that mean it would be good to boil those cotton balls?
If there sterile would that mean it's unnecessary to boil them? Sorry i'm still new to using cotton as a wicking material and been trying to figure out which cotton ball brands doesn't need to boiled since i'm not patient enough to boil them xD
I've been using the organic cottonballs from CVS, but I boil them first. The bag says they use hydrogen peroxide to bleach them and they have a faint smell of hydrogen peroxide to them. After boiling they have no smell and the flavor is much cleaner IMO.
Looks like those also use hydrogen peroxide for bleaching. I don't know that there is enough left over to do any harm, but hydrogen peroxide should not be inhaled. I felt that the hits were harsher and had a slightly off taste when using the unboiled cotton balls. This is why I tried boiling them in the first place.
I know boiling them is an extra step, but when you have some time why not buy a bag and boil a couple handfulls at once? Let them dry and put them into a Ziploc and you'll have a bunch ready to go.
I use CVS Rolled Absorbent Cotton Sterile USP that comes in the box. I used to use cotton balls (unboiled), but always had that aftertaste --- which eventually goes away after 5-10 puffs. With the sterile (unboiled), I haven't noticed much (if any) aftertaste --- except when it gets dry.

I tried boiling them and it has this weird off taste. just used it unboiled and right off the bat its much much better. to my knowledge hydrogen peroxide is not toxic once it dries. it just turns into water after sitting for a little while.
