safe distance from a black hole
Hi,
I have some 6mg 20/80 pg/vg and I have some 50mg vg
I wanted to make 30ml of 12(ish)mg.
I used 4.28ml of the 50mg and 25.71ml of 6mg.
I dont know, might have fudged it a few points but it isnt near 12mg, the effects of it is more like 18-24mg for me, a quick and instant hit with the possibility of over doing it in one or two puffs.
Did I do bad maths? or did just mess up somewhere else?

Thanks :)

Hi,
If your maths are correct and your ingredients are as stated.
You have 29.99ml of 12.28mg/ml

[ (4.28 x 50) + (25.71 x 6) ] / 29.99 = 12.28

Yeah... The Math sounds Good.

@Jebbn,
Here's is the specific measurements for 30mL of 12mg. e-liquid:
upload_2018-7-2_15-40-31.png

To make measuring a little easier; I would round off to 26mL, and 4mL respectively, which would leave you with an 11.87mg/mL mix.

In my mind, the two most likely culprits causing your problem are either; inaccurate measuring, or incomplete mixing.

Measuring is solved by using a method that is capable of measuring precisely enough. The use of syringes with fine enough graduations, or a scale capable of reading to 0.01g, are two of the more common DIY methods.

Complete mixing can be hampered by a couple of different things (individually, or combined). Filling the mixing bottle too full; which doesn't leave enough airspace for the liquid to slosh around adequately. If you filled a 30mL bottle, with 30mL of liquid, you probably had very little headspace (airspace) left at the top of the bottle. Using a larger mixing vessel (bottle, cup, beaker, etc.) can make blending the ingredients much more efficient.

A second hindrance to efficient blending is viscosity. The thicker the ingredients; the more effort required to mix them thoroughly. Because you are using a 20%PG/80%VG e-liquid, along with 100%VG nic base, I am imagining that you mixture is quite thick. (Temperature is also a contributor to viscosity. The cooler the liquids are, the more viscous (thicker) the fluids are likely to be.)

Combine these two issues; and you likely dis not get your mixture blended well enough. This will leave hot spots (concentrations of higher-than-desired nicotine), and cold spots (concentrations of lower-than-desired nicotine). That would give you the perception of too much nicotine... which in fact you could well be temporarily vaping.

Using a larger mixing vessel, and a bit of gentle warming of the liquid (90-120ºF), will make blending your two ingredients much more efficient. :)

(You can also use mechanical mixing aids like shakers, stirrers, and the like; but I am trying to keep this as simple for you as possible. ;))

4.2 ml of 50 mg = 210mg total
25.71 ml of 6 mg = 154 mg total

364 mg nic in 30 ml

364 divided by 30 = 12.1 mg/ml

Not the math

Hey @IDJoel, thanks for that.
I use a clamp system and a cordless drill in a vice to mix my juice :D It works.
Sometimes I just tape the bottle to the chuck and chase the dog and cats around with it like its a laser gun, they dig it.

I did good math I just didnt pay attention during the mixing. I did bad.
Reviewing what I did do I realise that I made up a batch of about 16mg. Not so bad but 12mg is the spot Im really happy at, that extra 4mg makes a difference!

Ah yes... "power mixing". :D

A few years back I saw a YT vid (someone please, please find it, I'm on my mobile) of a yokel parked on his couch, with a ~120ml bottle of DIY taped to the exposed ~10" blade of a Sawzall... laid across his legs.

And he pulled the trigger. :D

No damage, no injuries. But it was a little tense watching. ;)

I don't know how common, or severe, nic "hotspots" are in a bottle, but if true that sounds like a likely source of your problem. Especially if the nic bottle was stored cold (like we do).

When I mix mine, I don't use anything powered, just some real good shaking, once/day for a few days.

However, what helps it is to get it as evenly distributed the first time. @IDJoel brought up some very good points.

1) Use a larger container than you need. I like to have a my mixing container be 2x the size needed for the final ingredients.
2) I always add nic first regardless of VG or PG in my nicotine
3) Next, I add PG (least viscous), and shake the crap out of it. This ensures the nic is evenly distributed in the PG. This takes less effort than with VG. So mix it well this way to evenly dilute the nic in the PG before adding the VG.
4) Then, I add my VG in 2-3 portions, mixing it well with each volume of VG I add. Smaller amounts of VG will mix with the PG more quickly and thoroughly than just dumping all the VG in at once.
5) Once all the VG is added, I shake it until it's too cloudy to see though. Let it sit for day until all the air clears and it's clear again.
6) Shake and sit again, repeat daily for a few days.

If you are using a magentic stirrer, a blender, or something that will evenly disperse it in one shot, then the above isn't as important. But when manually shaking, the above help to get it evenly distributed and reduce hot spots, etc.

Of course, you will need to factor flavors in here as well. I don't use them. I typically mix a liter of unflavored juice at a time, the above has worked well for me. A liter usually lasts me 3.5 months, so it's not like I'm mixing juice all the time. If I did it more often, I might consider going with another method of mixing besides shaking.

I dont use flavours, I cant, I also dont usually use pg for pretty much the same reason I dont use flavours.
Usual mix is nic base, VG, DW, 30ml in a 50ml bottle then strapped to the cordless for a coupe of mins then, vape. Its a kind of fool proof mix. I should stick to it ;)

Just curious how do you know you "screwed up in the mixing"? I mean, do you know for certain that you added too much nic by what you have left or what?

I'm sure there have been times I've gone slightly over or slightly under, but not enough to notice.

Yeah no point doing all that math, and then messing up with the actual mixing (although I'm sure I've done it maybe not noticeably.

I'm just wondering how you know, so that you won't repeat the mistake and etc.

Keep in mind too, if your nic concentrate has been 'sitting' for a long time, folks say that the nic can settle out. If nicotine doesn't completely dissolve in the PG or VG base, then it is suspended, and yes, it will 'fall out' of solution to some extent. That will leave the nic at the bottom of the bottle of concentrate 'hot'.

When I pull concentrate out of the freezer, I let it warm to room temp, and give it a good mix before using it. I don't shake the crap out of it, but I roll the bottle, turn it over for a while, etc. Then let it settle for any air bubbles introduced by mixing to rise out of the nic conetrate before measuring it.

Not sure how much nic really settles out or how long it takes for this to be significant, but that could be a possible cause as well. I try to agitate my concentrate before using it to minimize this possible problem. Since most of my nic is in PG base, I can agitate it a bit more, and it doesn't introduce/hold air bubbles like VG does when you shake it.

I'm pretty sure that that is not how it works.

Yes, I know what I did. Exactly :D

I really like about 11-13mg, its right. 9mg doesnt do "it" and anything over 14ish does "it" too quick and if not aware, too hard

I strongly recommend using a eliquid calculator so you’ll never have the issue of questioning yourself:)
I, on the other hand, strongly recommend learning the math (it's not hard) so you'll never have the issue of blindly following mysterious directions that may or may not be right but you don't know how to tell the difference, with no real understanding of what you're actually doing or why.

Could also make 25ml in the 30ml bottle, sit it hot water for a few minutes to let that vg thin out & then shake like crazy. It wil all thicken up again as it cools so keep shaking it a little so it doesn't separate as it cools.
