Yep. Back then, a prescription to a nasty shampoo took care of it.

World gone mad.

That's what I think too. At least the few stories I have read seem to be reporting in fairly accurately.
@Baditude Have not a ton of searching, however the ones I have read referred to a mysterious illness and noted that it was reported in young vapers and that it appeared clustered and that more investigation of each single case would be required to find out if there is a common denominator. Even the local news here covered it and accurately pointed out that the true cause is unknown and said that it might be related to other" substances inhaled.

So I thought the media did a decent job covering it. I am a bit of a cynic in some areas though and I do believe that the CDC was no careful with their statement because now many of BT companies sell e-cigs so they do not want to piss off them off. One of the few things we can thank BT for. Otherwise they'd be screaming from the rooftops and I know some of the more vocal groups are.

I really hate that a kid died using something in his vape that shouldn't have been there, but as others have pointed out, it's not necessarily the tool, but the way that it's used that can cause a problem. People get killed by cars, motorcycles, power tools, bad food, alcohol, and disease. Many times it's because they used a product without reading the instructions or they used it improperly. In this case the contents were altered or replaced by someone who wanted to use the product for a different purpose than the manufacturer intended.

Alcohol is the chief catalyst in teen deaths. But apparently, we can't stop underage purchases of anything sold at a convenience store. Fake ID cards are easy to make at home if you have a good printer and access to the internet for a template.

Then there's this problem. It's from an ad I got an email on today from Eightvape. Check out the presentaiton (ignoring the price for a minute) and read that first line of the description regarding vaping "oil, flower, and wax". Then note it's labeled as a nicotine product. THis is the stuff that really damages the legitimate vape market, and it's from a fairly prominent online retailer. The email was devoted to "alternative" devices, this was just the most disturbing of the lot. Can you imagine how parents and the media will react to products being pushed by "legitimate" vape vendors like this one?

Vaping as in the action of inhaling vapor is a term used with many other substances. Vaping alcohol is an actual action and referred to as such despite it uses pressure instead of a heating element. It is not the proper way to for alcohol consumption (and dangerous) - but the point I am trying to get across is how the term “vaping” is used. There are products made specifically for vaping e-liquid, and also products made specifically for other substances that are referred to as “Vaporizers” (as @Eskie kindly identified). No idea which came first…I have found “other” products dating back as far as year 2000. Depending on regions these products are legal if used within their proper channels. So we do not know if these cases are from misusing e-cigarettes or from use of other products that have been misclassified by the media as an e-cigarette.

That does not change these unfortunate events, nor does it change the negative attention toward responsible “e-cigarette” use. But it may put things into perspective. We do not know if these users deliberately choose to vape a dangerous street drug. Nor do we know if they choose to vape something that is deemed non lethal and has been consumed in such a way (vaping) for quite some time. And given the underground methods of obtaining the later, it is possible the product was deliberately tainted for profit and or potency, or was unknowingly tainted through poor cultivation and or processing.

My daughter is now thirty-one. Several times when she was "finding herself" through an arduous path, I told her that I grew up in an easier time and that I was glad that I was not in her generation. Her time of growing up was more difficult than was mine. I think, as you say, the stakes are higher, the opportunity to go off course are plentiful and easier to find; often, there is little deterrent to going off course. Role models? What do we admire today?

IDK...When I grew up we were out of the house from 7am to 7pm (maybe popped in for dinner and homework).
We did some very dangerous and stupid stuff. (I know no one goes out anymore)
Went to outdoor concerts where dealers roamed the field hawking mind altering substances like candy.
Then our own government thought it was a good idea to spray Mexican :censored: fields with Paraquat.
Which sent thousands to hospitals with bleeding lungs.
I do know I was smart enough at any age, to realize eating a couple tablespoons of laundry detergent
was not a good thing to do, even if Johnny dared me.

I believe the "alternative" substance industry is partly to blame for what's going on.
They label all the products as "oil" whether it's meant to be vaped or not.
I could see someone thinking hey lets mix our own :censored: juice.
Look on YT how to refill a Juul pod.
Johnny get some "spice" from your brother, I'll get some vegetable oil from Mom.

Of course the media fails to warn anyone DO NOT VAPE OIL...It can cause lipid pneumonia.
Vaping "something" will be around, as long as :censored: is being legalized.
It should be a wake up call and teaching opportunity.
Unfortunately someone died and many got sick before the public is educated.

I'm so glad in my age, K9 and spice weren't around. I have to regularly peruse head shops and stuff to figure out what my goofy ones were doing.

Mine was a simpler time. Synthetic drugs are the devil.

Yes, I do feel for the kids, yes they are stupid, most human beings are from time to time, but most people are mad, not about the deaths etc., but how they are being used in the media.

I usually do at least a couple stupid things before breakfast.

It's not about the kids though. They are doing what kids do. They are being exploited : first by the seller then by the media.

If I was a parent I would be furious-- with the MEDIA.

I think there have been more deaths involving 'selfies'.

I don't think this next generation will be able to start a lawnmower.
