I sort of do nothing, and sort of do a lot of things. I haven't received a 'paycheck' since 1991 and have been totally freelance.
I write science fiction and fantasy short stories. That's more like fun than work, and it doesn't pay the bills.
I do some computer support, but it's usually that someone bought a program so they could do a specific task and can't figure out how to get what they want out of it, so I do it for them or set up templates that let them use it. Most of this is CAD/CAM, but I've also done a fair share of graphics, database, and accounting work. I also do freelance drafting (AutoCad).
I do some translation work, taking engineering reports and putting them into a language upper management can understand.
I do a bit of machining support, figuring out how to increase production and/or raise quality of parts made on ASMs, Hydromats, and CNC maching centers.
The largest share of my income is from advising companies on tech trends -- not the cutting-edge consumer/telecom stuff, but more of a "this new gizmo uses 'x' type of components, so new/better models of 'x' are going to be needed as the market for gizmos grows." This even touches on e-cigs -- the air pressure sensors for automatics is a definite growth field.
I don't really make a lot of money from any one thing, which is why I have to do a lot of different things.
