I've been vaping about a month but I still haven't figured out what a "throat hit" is. It's tough being in a virtual community and only u-tube videos and text to get the idea clear as i have only met one other e-cig user.

i mean if someone had a an e-cig with lousy TH and i vaped it and then they handed me one with good TH i would abvoiusly know what they were talking about.

I get a lung tickle, a throat irritation, a mild nicotine buzz. do these add up to throat hit?

compared to a flammable the main thing i miss is that light headed rush. is a throat hit the digital "analogue" (parallel)?

I don't know what you used to smoke, but try to imagine something a bit stronger. Now imagine the sensation you would expect in your throat taking your first hit of the day off of that. That's what they're talking about. Most of us got it to some degree off of our analogs. It was something that I usually only felt with the first one or if I was smoking a brand other then my usual one, a stronger one.

The TH is mainly the tingly throat irritation part.
A lot of factors can give you more or less TH.
Exemple being PG giving good TH but VG giving next to none.
Also direct inhaling giving huge TH but dragging in your mouth and THEN inhaling giving next to none.
the 510 giving good TH and the 901 being a lot softer on the throat.
Also the voltage, 5volt will give you a better TH than 3.7volts (which is the voltage on most stock batteries)
Also the nic strenght,10mg is pretty smooth but 24 and up mg starts to kick harder

If you have 100% pg juice, you direct inhale it on a 5v mod with a 510 atty on it, at 18mg im pretty sure you'll know what it is :)
Heck i just direct inhaled the stuff i was mouth drgging and went from no throat hit to choking like a new smoker.

like i said i have been vaping for 4 weeks, smoking (on and off) for 20 years. I know what smoking and vaping feel like, i know what a cigarette rush is. but i'm trying to get what this phrase "throat hit" means in practical terms.

I started out with a crap kit from a head shop, got a nice hybrid joye 306a/510 from some locals at vaporden.com and now i am reading all these reviews and trying figure out what to get next. everybody talks about amt of vapor, ok that's clear enough. flavor i think i get that. ...and then this elusive term throat hit.

any poets out there who can paint a picture in words, or technical/medical writers who can break down the physiology.

I like how dark cobra gave me a practical way to get the idea. I can take a mouth hit and then inhale or a direct lung hit and feel the difference.

is that what folks are talking about? a faint burning sensation at the back of the roof of the mouth around the tonsils maybe?

Poetic way: Everytime i direct inhale, it feels as if a tiny little elf would run up my tongue take a leap and hit the back of my velvet throat with a sledgehammer.

Actually scratch that i just tried again and it feels like the lil ....... leaped and dug his nails in there then slid down...if i catch that lil....

Sorry best i could do :(

It's the nicotine reaction on the mucus membrane in the throat. More nic, more hit - heat is a catalyst. I'm not big on throat hit but I want the feeling that I have some vapor in my mouth and that is one validation of that - it's the difference in feeling between just inhaling air and inhaling smoke or vapor. Some people need the hit of a habanero, some a jalapeno.
