It is basically just teriminology. It means you burnt out the coil. What you hear as "popping" is the juice as it is going from liquid to vapor. To really test an atty and see if it has a coil intact use a voltmeter.
Most of my new attys pop for the first few drags that I take, and it generally goes away once the attys are broken in. It occurs more frequently on my LR attys which burn a little hotter.
The noise you hear is pretty much normal. The popping is the water being vaporized.
The term popped frequently also refers to destroying the coil in the atty. It's very similar to a light bulb, and pops in the same way a lightbulb pops.
