What is the difference between throat hit and dry hit?

Throat hit is a mild feeling. A really dry hit is like you inhaled smoky fire. Are you getting a burnt taste?
Dry hit is when the cotton of your atomizer is literally burning because of lack of juice, saturation, etc. Throat hit, which is desired by some with certain setups, is much different and no where near the same as a dry hit. Throat hit tends to have similarities to inhaling a cig, you get that slight back of the throat sensation that has been aptly named as throat hit. Variations of PG/VG ratios tend to really effect how "throat hit" come about. Higher PG ratio juices tend to give a stronger throat hit and mouth to lung (MTL) tend to be the better setup for these desired vape preferences. I'm not real good at wording this stuff, so hopefully someone else will come along with a better explanation.
Could be a little of both..... irritation from from heat can also result from too hot of vapor. Nicotine and PG can get harsh with heat. Also some flavors. That harshness is throat hit. DRY hit is usually associated with inhaling hot AIR rather than heated juice. The hot air hit often includes smoke from burning wick...... rarely tastes good.

A dry or burnt hit is pretty much no eliquid in your coil (for whatever reason) or not enough wicking happening, or too high a wattage, or all sorts of things like that.
A throat hit is produced by PG and nicotine, it's a "sensation" you feel in the back of your throat when you inhale, similar to a cigarette, etc. The higher nic level and PG, the more throat hit you will likely feel, although there are some additives that offer a "throat hit" as well.
If you are getting an uncomfortable sensation, it's possible your wattage is too much for the coil, that your PG or nic is too high, etc. I would look at changing some of those factors (e.g. less nicotine less PG, or less wattage) to see if it makes a difference.
Once your coil is burnt, it's burnt. However if you are habitually sort of "pushing" your coil or juice to higher wattages than you'd like, well, it's certainly possible that you could try adjusting some of those factors.
My throat was really torn up when I got here, I was actively looking to AVOID a throat hit and used nicotine salts. Now that my respiratory system has calmed down I will be seeking out more of a throat hit by using freebase nicotine and etc.
However, you can vape with very LITTLE to no throat hit and be satisfied, while sometimes folks really want a throat hit and push the envelope with higher PG, nic, etc.
However, it sounds to me that you are getting a poorly wicked/dry hit for whatever reason, and you might want to look at changing that. The problem with habitually over vaping a coil is it can shorten coil life, make it hard to identify when your wick is well and truly burnt and etc, and depending on how much you may be overheating that coil, you may be producing undesirable byproducts in your vape and etc. I don't know if that is the case, but it's certainly possible.

I got a dry hit when my tank was dry and I didn't realize until too late. Felt like inhaling a fire but worse. Trust me, you'll know if you get a dry hit and will actively avoid it afterwards!
There are those vapers who prefer higher watts, mouth to lung, for a harsher vape. I can't stand the heat myself. Whether it's too much of a desirable hit depends on whether you like it.
If the flavour's ok then it isn't a dry hit.
I use 24mg's with a 1 ohm coil at 11.5 watts and it's not a hot harsh vape but purely a satisfying nicotine throat hit.

If you are out and about and you vape and it's nasty. Really nasty. It tastes like hatred mixed with torture and you think, "I want to die! Maybe if I stick my head out into traffic and my face gets hit by a bus, it will take the taste away!" that's a dry hit.
An empty tank is when a dry hit is most likely for me. I've learnt when a dry hit is imminent, the flavour is just a little off, that's when i change tanks.

Here is the process of degradation I experienced with all of my coils: At the beginning, the flavor is strong and smooth, I taste the sweeteners on my tongue very much, the airflow is perfect, and I can vape at maximum wattage (indicated on the coil) without any throat irritation (I don't vape at the max wattage except for a few hits). As time passes, the taste starts to get weaker and less sweet, airflow becomes less, and vaping at max wattage would hurt my throat. I will need to lower the wattage from 30w to 25w, and after a while even 25w will hurt my throat. It seems dry hit is not binary, but instead a spectrum. The ability of wicks to absorb the juice fast enough decreases continuously. Throat irritation at 25w is when I decide I need to change the coil. (At this stage if I try 35w I will get that hellish dry hit.)
Throat hit is normal and should not require any unusual setting. It comes from nicotine, PG, and/or flavoring. Tobacco flavors can greatly enhance throat hit but almost any flavoring if strong enough will hit with physical force.. Flavoring throat hit is presumably enhanced by the exact things that enhance flavor itself.

I would say that if you're very familiar with your vape and the perfect settings for flavor you're probably safe, because that's a good deal cooler not just a little.

The Melancholy Juice company made a few for a while. Their first juice, Atrabilious Apple was big hit amongst the Goth set because of its biter, angst filled apple cider vinegar taste. Their second juice was going to be called the Fog of Desolation. It never made it to production. Apparently when you heat and vaporise Zoloft, it turns into arsenic. The whole staff died but they went out the way they wanted to, as stoic champions of lugubriousness.

Being filled with anguish and self-doubt, I never am completely satisfied with my first thought on a dry hit or even my second.
