To make it short, what ever floats your boat. It is important to know if the wood's properties meet your needs i.e. durability, workability/splintering, and smell. Cedar has a smell that is pleasurable to some, but god awful to others. Some woods I would suggest for beauty and durability would be American Black Walnut, Cocobolo, purple heart, ironwood, paduk, rosewood, and zebra. Zebra wood is splintery, but it is pretty. Some are easier to come by than others, and some are more variant than others. Some black walnut I have seen have nice curly/fiddleback grain with nice burl... but others are plain jane. I personally work with mostly black walnut because I have a good supply of it from a downed tree I had milled out. I hope that helps, happy woodworking danwelsh!
