I started with a Snoke One disposable cigarette. After a few weeks of buying One's I bought their rechargeable version and it was satisfying, but I went through several carts a day and this was becoming financially unpleasant. It also wasn't enough to break me free of cigarettes as the Snokes lacked any kind of satisfying throat hit. I also was getting frustrated at the very limited selection of flavors available on the Dutch market.
I started looking into clearomizers but I was indecisive on taking the plunge until I saw a two-pack deal (two clearo's two batteries, adapter, juice) on a Daily Deal website and snatched it up. I was under the impression that it would be a Joyetech clearomizer but it turned out to be a clone (in hindsight, they didn't advertise it as genuine so it was my own fault for assuming as much). Oh well, it vaped okay and going through juice instead of carto's was certainly cheaper. My biggest cons were that the draw on it was stiff, and that vapor production decreased to pitiful levels as the batteries drained.
After only a week of using it, I started looking into some better gear and eventually ended up with a Kanger protank Mini 3 and a Spinner II. The difference was ridiculous and I discovered the magic that is Variable Voltage vaping. This was also the kit that got me off the cigs for good, and I combined it with some excellent e-liquid right off the bat (thank you Virgin Vapor).
The Spinner II took seriously long to charge, so didn't take long for me to order a second one, along with an Aerotank that was part of the kit. That's what I'm vaping on these days. I'm not sure of my next upgrade yet, but I'm looking into the MVP2, Provari and VaporShark DNA30. I may also get into RBA's at some point since I really like fiddling with my Kanger coils already.
