Well, this is the one we are seriously considering. I am going to take the youngest back again tonight for one more look.

I'm a firm believer in crate training for many reasons beside my previous example. Those first 9 months are the most destructive as they're teething. After that it's good for general behavior issues. I still have Jackson's cage in the corner for feeding time since Bear isn't real good at defending himself these days.

Puppy's cute, you can name her Queena so she would be the Queena Shiba. Bad I know.....

Actually she's right on. We looked again and I left a deposit. We are picking her up Friday. I went and looked at some crates but wasn't sure what to get and they seemed kind of expensive. The dog will be a max of 25 pounds so I'm not sure which crate to get.

Hitt, I knew she was, I was just funnin'. You may be able to get away with a small cage, I think they're good to about that weight, but you'd be safe with a medium. Don't forget Craigslist. I found a $100+ cage on there for $25 the last time. I had a cage from my two goldens that my gf loaned out that never got returned. She's an expert at that. Anyway, it was like new, they even had kept the box.

Good morning. I looked on craigslist but didn't find anything I was interested in. I looked online at petco and petsmart and they show some for a little under $50 but when I got to the stores they didn't have them and only had the more expensive ones. My wife is going to look at Walmart today and if she doesn't find one then I'll probably just go ahead and get one from petsmart.

Hitt, congrats. What are you going to name her? When we got Pixie's crate we put one of my used t-shirts in there to get her used to the smell and associating it with a safe place. We also got a wire crate. Plenty of ventilation for warm days, and we cover it with a blanket in winter.

Roth, I never could get into Jim Gaffigan. My son however loves him.Jeff Dunham is more my speed.

Hitt, since you are new to this dog thing you may want to pick up a copy of "The Dog Listener" by Jan Fennell.

Of all the dog books I've read (and I've read a few), this one seems to cover the things that I've done with my dogs over the years that served me well. The only thing I never used were treats to get the dogs attention. As much as I complain about Jacks and his outside behavior, that is the one place I have not devoted the time I normally do with my dogs.

I'm starting to feel guilty that I haven't. He listens exceedingly well within the confines of the house. However, once he's outside and off leash, he is stubborn. I've found it easier to just walk him rather than train him. I had reread twice her instructions on developing your "leader of the pack" role, but the heat of this summer has been discouraging to work him. Maybe your getting a pup will motivate me to get him under outside control. He's the only dog I ever had that I needed a leash for.

Good morning. Axl, the wife ended up finding a crate at Lowes for a decent price.

Roth, I've been reading a book that I got at the library but I'll definitely check out the one you suggested. I'm still kind of nervous and excited about bringing the dog home tomorrow. I still worry about how the cat will react.

I wish I was still volunteering at the thrift store, I'm sure I'd eventually find another copy. Unfortunately, I got replaced by a FTE and they doubled the price of books, but it would still only be $2. I got curious since you got one of those book gizmos. I went on Amazon to check the price for kindle versions. The prices of the electronic version is now higher than either the hardback or softback, amazing! If you look at the costs of raw materials, production and packaging, there's just no justification for that type pricing. Anyway, check it out on Amazon and read the comments (I didn't but I'm sure they're good). I'll use a term my last boss used, "I highly recommend", followed by what ever he had to say. He defined his highly recommend as, "You'll be sorry if you don't follow my recommendation".

If you're reading a book on basic puppy care, most are pretty good. Once you get to the "sit", "stay", "heal" stuff is where Jan is so amazing.

I wouldn't worry too much about the cat, I've had cats and dogs all my life also. I'm getting a bit tired of the cat thing but that's because too many ended up here and they wore out their welcome (plus the one I really loved is gone). The worst, and funniest, incident I had was one of the first. I had an existing cat and brought a full grown black Lab Shepard into my household. The cat was an indoor outdoor cat and would come to the door and meow if it wanted in. The dog was in the house and the cat was at the kitchen door so I left him in not really thinking about that first meeting.

So the car saunters in like cats do and was meowing as it did when it wanted food. He had the closed door behind him, cabinets on the right and a portable dishwasher directly in front of him. Damianne must have heard him and came into the kitchen to investigate the sound. All the cat can see is this 60 pounds of black animal blocking his only exit from his current position. The fur went full fluff, he let out this scream as if he was being killed, then jumped straight up at least two thirds of the door's height. I guess he used the curtain for leverage because the next thing I saw and heard was the road and curtain flying against the cabinets, he propelled himself onto the dishwasher and was gone from the room.

Poor Damianne had this look on her face like "what was that"? My ex and I were laughing so hard it hurt. Needless to say it took a few days to see much of the cat and he was always very careful as he moved from location to location until he realized the dog wasn't some monster.

Cats seem to normally avoid dogs until they realize their personalities. Puppies usually will be let known when they overstep their boundaries. TBear- all the cats know is a big lug. I've had cats crawl up and sleep with him. Hailey, the little one, still gets avoided but not so much after 10+ years. Jackson- they generally don't want to see him.

You're going to have a lot of help here on the pet support helpline. :)

Hitt, we have two Tortie's which are notorious for being intolerant of other animals. They were ok with Pixie being brought in. It probably helps that they out weigh her about 3 to 1. It's pretty much she leaves them alone, and they let her live here. I think you're cat will be fine. They know how to stay away from puppie's.

Thanks for the encouraging words. I do appreciate it. The cat went to the vet yesterday and is weighing in at about 13.5 pounds. The puppy probably weighs three or four. I know the cat can take care of itself but just don't want it to go nuts and start marking territory. Our last cat went nuts when we brought our current cat home as a kitten but that cat was a little nuts already.

I know but the one we had was double nuts. It was found downtown as a kitten by one of our friends and then they took it home and their dog almost killed it. We took it from them and raised it. I think it was mentally scarred or something. When we brought the current cat home, it would chase it and try to kill it. We tried separating them for a while and re-introducing them but the older one went nuts. We put it on kitty tranquilizers for a month and it still didn't help.
