Cool. I started playing drums at 10, then took up guitar at 13. Our school yearbooks had senior predictions and mine was "The worlds greatest heavymetal lead guitarist". I never actually made it that far, but I was able to record 2 albums worth of originals with my band (Black Diamond) in a guys basement 16 track studio. Over the years I just got to be more of a successful drunk than anything else, though. I still have the cherry Les Paul Custom I bought new in 1980; the sunburst '69 Strat I got off a former bandmate; a pre '82 Jackson/Charvel (San Dimas I think); and a Fender acoustic/electric. Gone are the '62 Flying V and the '70 SG (desperate days of old). Also, throughout the years I've managed to hold onto my '69 Fender Dual Showman with 15" JBL's and a Crate chorus head adorning 2 MTX Pro 215's. Not to mention a bevy of old, dysfunctional Gibson and Fender practice amps along with some Bogen and Marshall to round things out. I've always been a sucker for Gibson solid bodies, but my oldest son is nose-deep in Epiphone and Fender. I honestly have to say I sold myself short back in the day by not buying Epi's. I know they're now owned by Gibson, but as far as I know Epiphone is run as a sovereign company. Good stuff.

:)

that's awesome victor.one of these days i'd love to see pics of your les paul and strat. i have a real soft spot for a good gibson and fender tweeds.
if you ever get ready to off that dysfunctional stuff - let me know. components for old tube amps are drying up every day and it's always a good thing if i can get parts to keep another old amp going for another couple of years :)
i've got a bunch of guitars and amps but my main squeeze lately has been a tv yellow 56 les paul junior and a 57 pro :

Wow, I had no idea that TV played. Maybe you guys can give me some lessons. Guitar lessons that is. I don't have any of that old cool stuff like you guys but I'll get a pic of my anniversary strat to share. I tried learning drums when I was a teenager but my dad wouldn't put up with the noise. Like I said before I didn't start learning guitar until I was 29 so I missed out on having stuff from when I was a kid.

BCB, what are you doing, spreading viruses on this thread? I got up to hear my gf had malware on her pc. You women going on those questionable sites. Fortunately I was gone most of the day and I think her nephew got her out of trouble. At least I hope so because I don't want to spend all of sunday trying to get her PC running right.

I came down with my second cold of this season. I thought stopping smoking was supposed to make you healthier. I guess it has since the first one only lasted a few days and this one may be a relapse, but even so. I'm trying to cure it with

Ha! I had great hopes that stopping smoking would change my world too! All stopping did was make me stink less. Still am proud of myself, but still!
Ahhhh, back in the day I was SOOOOO into musician boys! LOVED the long hair, etc. I was a violin nerd though so wasn't cool enough to actually date any of them!

Hiya Wiz :). Physically I'm a wreck, mild osteoarthritis in most of my joints, torn ligament in one knee, carpal tunnel of both wrists, both rotator cuffs torn, tennis elbow of both forearms (never played tennis, either) and a short peter. All from hard work and play....except the later, which I prefer to consider a birth defect . And all at the tender age of 46, but I figure anything over 21 is change in the bank :).

hit, I never learned music reading even though I took lessons for almost a year. I did comprehend Pentatonic scales and chord structure, I just couldn't remember the chords or symbols. I played everything by ear and could finger the appropriate chords solely by recognizing the relationship between the tone and the octave (pitch). It worked great for playing covers, but to convey anything original to other guys I had to play it rather than write it. If tablature had been invented back then I would've had another way to communicate it. I did have my own form of tab, but it was just reminders that only I could understand. As to the mechanics of guitar, I have no idea. For me it's more like what feels right. Most musicians listen to music and pick out each individual instrument, like sound tunnel-vision. That's how I heard the fingered chords of a riff (a few years ago I started playing keyboards the same way, which was an easy transition). Anything I copied I feel was either true to the original version or purposely had some added kick, but I doubt my method would be teachable. GM probably has some ideas. After jammin' with hundreds of players over the decades, I've yet to meet one that didn't understand the mechanics better than me :(.

Gee GM, you do have some old stuff. I'll give ya a heads-up if I come across any old electronic repair shops running close-out sales on 6L6's :).

Eureka...you're right, roth. I've had a bad one for the last week and the only ones I've been around are here. And BCB didn't specify what kind of virus. Hmmm :glare:.

Hey now....I like the violin. My ol' granddad played one and I always thought they were cool, even though I've never made the attempt to play one. Actually, I was always afraid to touch one. So, whatta ya got goin' on next Saturday? I'll ask the wife if she minds.....

Good morning everyone. I too played violin and cello for a few years in school and was ok but not great at it. My youngest started violin lessons a few months ago and had taken a year of piano lessons before giving up on that. The oldest has been playing cello for three years. The oldest started to show some interest in guitar a couple years ago so I bought her a 3/4 fender strat but it didn't take. I still have it in the basement though if she ever changes her mind. I tried to upload a picture of the guitar I was talking about before but when I hit the manage attachments button then it only loads half the page and of course the button to upload is not visible. I'll try again another time. I'm going over to my brother in law's house later. He has an old compressor that supposedly will work on 110 or 220v and wants me to see if I can wire it up for him. Of course there is no nameplate or wiring diagram. TV you would be proud, I totally skipped my workout yesterday but am afraid I will have to go do it before I leave for his house. I'm trying to slack. Just like everything else, I'm not that great at it.

Ah, no wonder I like hanging out here. I always loved hanging out with the musicians! When I was in my 20's, nothing better than watching a tall long haired handsome man in spandex pants wailing on an Ibanez Destroyer. Ok, we could have done without the Spandex. LOL

My roommate bartended in several clubs so we knew most of the club owners in Phoenix. I spent a bunch of time in the clubs with her while she worked nights and met loads of the band members. Great friends (but made for crappy boyfriends). Since most were from SoCal, I'd go visit often to party for the weekend (driving over friday afternoon and drive home Sunday night to go to work Monday morning). Yikes, I have no idea how I survived that.

Once I was sitting in a club in Phoenix waiting for some friends and a tall, gorgeous man with long flowing blond hair introduced himself as Chris and asked if he sit with me and buy me a drink. (duhh!!) After a while a few people came to the table to ask for autographs and I figured out he was Chris Homes from W.A.S.P. Nice guy and I was flattered by his attention, but knew better than to go there. LOL A few years later I saw the documentary The Decline of Western Civilization II where he was floating in the pool with his mother sitting pool side pouring vodka down his throat and talking about how he was a full blown alcoholic and that he drank because he didn't like being the person that he is. Sad stuff.

TV, I think you've dodged a bullet by missing that heavy metal tour bus. Seems you are planted right where you are meant to be (with Mama and the little twisters)....

TV, I learned with tab. I know how to figure out what notes are what with regular music but don't know it good enough to play from a sheet of music. I don't know if it's because I started out as an adult but the teacher I had would have me bring in a song on cd and then he would tab it out and I would try to learn it. I still feel like there's a ton that I don't know about playing and want to take more lessons but right now the kids getting to do what they want to is more important and I don't want to take on another monthly payment. Not to mention I really don't practice enough on my own to really justify taking lessons. Maybe some day when the kids are older. I think some people have a natural talent for it and some people have to work their butts off and still aren't that good. I think I am part of the second group. I did work hard at it for the first few years after I started but then I am not sure what happened. I kinda felt like I had hit a plateau but still wasn't very good at all. I feel like I am missing alot of the knowledge and theory end of it but don't know if that would help me play better. I think that maybe I will never be a great player but it sure is a fun hobby.

Gutter, do you see what you've started? ;) Musicians coming out of the woodwork now!

Hitt, I've been making TV proud this weekend too- haven't run since thurs, BUT I have a good reason....ummm...my hubby keeps folding up the treadmill and while I'm willing to run on it, I'm not willing to unfold it. Weird sort of lazy! I can't do my outside route cuz my hubby has been working til late every night and the kids don't think it is entertaining to bike with me while I do my run. Something about having to peddle so slow their bikes tip over.

Looking at a pile of laundry and hoping it magically folds itself and puts itself away with

No I still didn't find the weatherstripping. I know its the original that came on the windows but don't know what kind of windows the builder used.

That's too funny about the bikes tipping over. I just finished my workout. Maybe you need a heavier treadmill like I have. I'll bet he wouldn't fold it up then. I can totally understand the feeling of not wanting to unfold it to use it. It's odd how things like that happen.

Hitt - i've played quite a few of those anniversary strats and they are great guitars.i'd love to see it.
I was lucky enough to be born into a musical family .my dad is a drummer and his dad was a horn player so i started getting drum lessons before i could walk :)
i never learned to read music or learned theory.i just picked things up as i went along.

I'm with you man. i couldn't teach my way out of a paper bag. Alot of people have the "theory kills creativity" voodoo and i somehow picked up that school of thought over the years.I guess looking at it from an artistic standpoint, that it would be true that if you know what is "right" that you wouldn't be as likely to venture into "wrong" territory and would be more apt to lead with your left brain. It sure would be nice to know what i'm doing sometimes though :)

It looks as if some rain might be moving in today (which is a good thing). it's been so hot and dry here this summer that it looks like all my plants have kicked the bucket.Looks like i'll be re-landscaping things in the spring.sigh....
Either way,It's a beautiful day out. it's overcast, windy and 75 or so and i'm sitting on the deck with a grov portion and some chai.i ran 2.5 miles last night with no intervals and my back is taking it out on me today.Today WILL be a slack day for sure.

Hey gang. Been a busy weekend... I know it has... but I don't seem to have much to show for it. The carpet doesn't even have those nice "vacuum cleaner" lines any more. At least the fridge is full of food and the truck is out in the driveway getting washed... errr... I mean rained on. At least the top layer of dust will run off.

I was looking around at the landscaping yesterday, Gutter and it looks like I'll be doing some replanting in the spring too. The front seems to have held up ok, but a couple of rhododendrons in the back look like they've had it. I wish we'd get two or three days of this rain.

I think I got my computer fixed finally. Most frustrating week I've had in a while. Now if I can get the new septic leach field installed next week I can take the plate off the shower drain so the smell doesn't engulf me. Is it possible there's no u-trap or p-trap or something down there? Scheesch. Sorry if my virus spread to other computers and respiratory tracts. Be glad your septic is working, that's all I've got to say.

Regarding musical ability--I have none, but we did play the drums in band and orchestra because drumsticks cost only $1.50 back then and you could drum all over the house (my brother's head was a good choice IMO) for free! So I love the music and loved drumming. Linoleum (the old hard kind) was GREAT. Actually, just about everything in the kitchen made for a good session.

My mother was a record-player hog and only listens to jazz. Got kind of sick of it, cuz I wanted to listen to Motown, my personal favorite. So we got to squeeze in every so often to listen to Aretha and Marvin Gaye. Then right back to modern jazz...
