I have been using the same bottles for as long as I have had my REO's. Only change them if they break. Never had that happen.

I am not even sure what type of plastic is used in these bottles. Would have to look it up and see what is said about long term use.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

These are HDPE bottles, so leaching shouldn't be a major problem. I'd definitely give them a good cleaning out every once in a while.

Personally, I keep a couple dozen of them around, and keep several filled for easy changeout. After use I clean them out with alcohol (soap and water are just hard to get down in there, no brush that small!). I give them a soak, let 'em dry out and refill them.

Hope that helps!

Adding: I'm no expert in the field, though I would think that constantly depleting the bottle is different than putting liquid in it and leaving it for a year. I wouldn't want to use them for long term storage, but for our purposes I don't think it would be a problem. Now if it was LDPE, that might be a different story...

HDPE is used as a "chemical resistant barrier" in many applications, including to protect ground-soil and water supplies under landfills. Still, not sure I'd want to leave liquid in one for a long time.

FWIW, this is the same plastic used in most bottles liquid is shipped in, so unless you order from one of the few companies using glass, or you move your liquid to glass when you receive it, it's really no different.

Interesting question. I've had the same bottle in my grand for.....I dunno, a year and a half, I guess.
My initial thoughts are that plastic leaching would not be progressive. It occurs but does it occur at a greater rate over time? Beats me.
I'm looking forward to hearing the input on this. Great post!:)

That is interesting. even if it is leeching chemicals, I used to smoke 20 cigarettes a day that would leech a whole lot more harmful chemicals. There is a point where I say, meh. I am going to be exposed to plenty of chemicals before my days on this earth are over. Just my opinion though, thanks for bringing this to our attention and this was written not to diminish the concern of those reading. :)

I'd love to know if the Dekang bottles are LDPE or HDPE (not that I use Dekang, just interested). There are some who have seemingly valid concerns with LDPE, but I don't know enough about it to determine. The translucent 30mL bottles most companies use are HDPE. The transparent 10mL bottles, I don't know about...
