Just a guess, but I'd say he uses cotton balls.I am about to order a IGO-L and will be using cotton balls with it....going to try my hand at the micro coils.

Get back with us because I'm curious to see how cotton balls work. I heard you don't even have to boil them. I personally use cotton yarn. So much better than silica.

I have used cotton yarn and I prefer cotton balls over that, the sterile 100% organic you don't have to boil. Going to try bamboo this weekend, I heard people say it's better than cotton. It's all subjective though.

And where do you get that bamboo stuff? Is there a specific brand of cotton balls I should get? Does it say sterile 100% organic on the plastic?

CVS sells them, it should say on the package. This is what people are using for bamboo, that natural color. Can pick it up at Michael's or Jo-Anns. It will need to be boiled.

Why? Did the cotton balls wick better? Or is it just easier to deal with since its sterile and ready to go? I have both (pharmacy grade balls and using Peaches and Cream 100% yarn).

I'd love to start rewicking my own coils... and if I can eliminate the need to get wicks, a long roll of Kanthal will go a LONG way.

With the cotton balls, do you roll (not twist) it a bit or just bunch it enough to get a wick-like structure? I know its a feel thing, but when it tried cotton ball for a top wick, it kind of puffed up a bit too much inside the coil and probably choked things a little bit.

The ease of use and price of cotton balls can't be beat. A little cotton goes a long way, I pinch some off of the ball and lightly roll it in my fingers, if it doesn't easily slide through my coil (wrapped on a 1/16 drill bit) then I pull some off and try again. Cotton expands when it absorbs the juice to something like 3x its size. I typically let the juice saturate the wick for 30 minutes to an hour before using. On my Protanks I replace the wick every day, after a few tanks the cotton gets gunky. I wash off the head and slide the wick out, pulse the coil to get rid of any gunk and slide another wick in. You get a feel for it after a while.

I've used cotton cheesecloth. It's already stranded. I just cut a section out, roll (not twist) it to the desired diameter and go. It also swells a bit, but so far so good. As for diameter, it's more of a feel thing than a measurement thing.

In fact, the first thing I do when putting a factory new coil in one of my BCC's is pull out the silica flavor wick and replace it with my own. I like it a little longer than what comes stock from the factory, and the cotton just seems to wick better.

I'm not a rebuilding expert. I've only done it a few times to show myself that I could. I've decided to just keep a steady stock of replacement coils in the pipeline because it's just not economical for me to rebuild every coil (my time is worth a lot).
