I have been vapeing for 8 months and still like the smell of fresh cigarette smoke....I can be around smokers with zero problems and even allow my last remaining smoking family member to smoke in my house. The smell of stale smoke however gags me

I'll always love fresh cigarette and cigar smoke. It's the stale leftover remnants that are unpleasant to me.

Friend: I need to lose weight.
Me: Me to. How are you going to do it.
Friend: Diet and taking up running. You?
Me: I was thinking of becoming a Bulimic.
Friend: A Bulimic? You know that involves throwing up, right?
Me: Yeah. So. That way, no counting calories.
Friend: That is just unhealthy.
Me: Um....I don't think so. It's the diet favored by super models. Super models! You don't think they would call them super if they did something unhealthy do you?
Friend: Dude it's unhealthy! It's a disease!
Me: A disease? It's a finger down the throat! That's all any candy ... can do it. Watch! (I popped a finger and chucked over the edge of the porch) See? That was the pizza we just had for dinner. All those calories gone and my stomach got a work out tossing it up. I'm gonna get us some beers. I have a funky taste in my mouth.

Returns back and gives friend a beer.

Friend: Thanks. This beer tastes funny.
Me: Really?
Friend: Yes...it tastes...I'm gonna be sick..(he chucked over the side of the porch)
Me: Oh, that's because I put some syrup of ipecac in your beer. You are gonna be vomiting for the next 5 to 10 minutes or so. All those pizza calories, gone! You are welcome!
Friend: Oh you suck....(bleeeeeeeeeeechhhhhh.......heeeeeaveeee..)
Me: Puke on the rose bushes, they can use some fertilizer
Friend: Hey, there's my pizza! Here comes the garlic bread! (bleeeeeeeeeeechhhhhh.......heeeeeaveeee..) Hey, I don't feel bloated any more!
Me: Told ya! Weight loss made easy!
Friend: You may be on to something!
Me: Yup, and we can make a competition out of it. Most lost weight. Best distance chucked, most chucked, first one to lose a tooth, etc. The possibilities are endless
Friend: You are a good friend. Thanks for loving me through my ignorance.
Me: You're welcome. Do you want to borrow a shirt for the drive home? That one has vomit on it.
Friend: Yeah. We'll do a weigh in tomorrow.
Me: Done!

Really? You must not have quit very long ago. When I'd been smoke-free about 10 days, and caught a whiff outside a store we were leaving, it nearly gagged me. Can't believe I stank like that for 39 yrs.

Andria

We had a rainstorm here the other day. I pulled my slicker out of the closet when I made a run to the grocery. It stunk so bad of cigs that I thought I was going to toss my cookies. I ended up just taking an umbrella which had been safely stored in the trunk of my car (never smoked in the car).

The old adage that you can lead a horse to water applies here I think.

I've encouraged a lot of people to vape instead of smoke, I've given them equipment, juice and advice and some have stuck with it and stopped smoking.

Others have quit vaping and gone back to smoking and one person just stopped vaping and didn't start smoking again.

I don't feel any responsibility for any of them - I know that vaping is a harm reduction approach to stopping smoking and not necessarily a no-harm alternative (although it may turn out to be). I feel comfortable with that, some others don't.

So all you can do is talk about it, keep debunking those stupid facebook rumors and then leave them alone. When they are ready, be there for them. Try not to be too hard on them or yourself.

Similar story...got my sister a starter setup, she carried it down to visit a sick friend, a Dr. (psych. actually) who's unfortunately, got colon cancer. While down there, she kept "missing" her ego stick, come to find out he had grabbed it and was using it around his house...

When she returned and told me he was "stealing her vape" I immediately ordered him an MVP and tanks and some juice and fedex'd it down to him. He was a 3pad Camel smoker and was slow to jump into the vaping. (He was buying his smokes 10 cartons at a time!!) But I just heard yesterday, after about a month of him "half and half" smoking, that he was finally out of ciggies and ready to go it just vaping. But my sister said in the month he'd been "half smoking/half vaping" that he had gained 10 lbs.--he was down to 104, now up to 118-- and HIS doctor is "thrilled" that he has taken up vaping, rather than smoking. So, he's really looking at things optimistically, hoping to extend his life as long as possible, and I think it's great!!!

He, and we, know this wont "save" his life, but if it gives him some happiness down the home stretch, I'm happy for him. But like you said, there was no guarantee that he would "take" to the vape, but he did....and Im glad!

Im really struggling with some of my friends' defense of staying on cigs. Here's a convo I had with my best friend of 30 years last night:

Friend: Well, I dont think I want to vape.
Me: Why not?
Friend: You know youre inhaling metal dont you?
Me: Says who?
Friend: some article I read in USA Today.
Me: Yes, there are trace amounts present; however, standing at the bus stop in a major city has thousands more contaminants than vapor. You know that, right?
Friend: mumbles
Me: I can provide you scientific evidence if you'd like.
Friend Nah its OK. Oh also, propylene glycol is used in ANTIFREEZE!!! That cant be safe!!!
Me: Uh, you understand there are various grades of PG, right?
Friend: I dunno just doesnt sound healthy.
Me: Quick question: Do you eat corn on the cob? Or eat cereal? Or anything with corn in it?
Friend: Of course! Its delicious!
Me: You know corn is the main ingredient in ethanol, right? That corn will kill you!
Friend: (laughs) Good one, but not the same.
Me: Explain to me in scientific terms why its not the same as you saying PG is used in antifreeze?
Friend: Well, I cant really. I just dont think I want to vape.
Me: So youre comfortable choosing to inhale over 7000 toxins, hundreds are toxic, and over 70 are KNOWN to cause cancer according to the CDC, tar, and a proven cause of lung cancer and heart disease instead?
Friend: Well, not a nice way to put it, but yeah.
Me: No its not nice. Sometimes the truth hurts, doesnt it?

And thats how that convo went. /sigh. No concept of harm reduction whatsoever. Total buy-in of the FUD being published by mainstream media. Willful ignorance of scientific facts.

Anyone else have a convo like this with someone?

The only convo's I've had that are similar, are me having to explain to someone WHY I vape, and WHY it is a healthier alternative to smoking cigarettes.

I really don't try to convince people to switch , no offense but I find it comes off as kind of annoying, even to ME, and I'm a vaper!

It reminds me of those people who decide to quit smoking, after YEARS of daily smoking, and after a few days to a week of not smoking, suddenly they are over zealous and are trying to force everyone around them to quit, and they bring up all these 'facts' statistics, about how bad cigs are, how stinky they are , this and that. It isn't that they are wrong, they aren't...cigs do smell, they are bad for your health...but smokers already know this....and until a few days ago, YOU WERE A SMOKER. (not you OP, the people I'm referring to).

Honestly, if you like to vape, that is YOUR choice. If you like to smoke, that is YOUR choice. People should let others do what they want, as long as it doesnt hurt OTHER people. (I get it, second hand smoke, yada yada.....sorry, that doesn't do it for me).

I have had those conversations sooo many times. If you raise kids, you have them.

Sometimes, people are just closed-minded. BUT, a simple conversation can make them start to wonder. I call it planting a seed.

A pretty good skimmer for ammo.

"General Toxicity Observations
Upon reviewing the available toxicity information, the Agency has concluded that there are no
endpoints of concern for oral, dermal, or inhalation exposure to propylene glycol and
dipropylene glycol. This conclusion is based on the results of toxicity testing of propylene
glycol and dipropylene glycol in which dose levels near or above testing limits (as established in
the OPPTS 870 series harmonized test guidelines) were employed in experimental animal studies
and no significant toxicity observed."

Heh... I quit on the last day of Feb, and since then, I've been very fortunate that I've only needed my leather jacket when I've gone outside, and not my big ol "parka", which just REEKS of cigarette funk -- likewise my suede gloves. I think the gloves are probably toast, doubt anything could get 10 yrs of that smell out of suede; I already told my husband I was going to need new gloves this fall. The parka will definitely need dry cleaning... :D Thank god I never wore that leather jacket much when I went out to the porch to smoke... :D

When I quit smoking cold-turkey once for 3 months, it never started smelling bad to me; everytime I'd smell it, I'd want to just follow my nose to the nearest cigarette and steal it right out of whoever's mouth it was in! This time, within 7-10 days, I just cannot stand that smell, it smells like garbage and burning tar, just plain FOUL.

I'd be happy if the friend staying with us would just stop dragging that stink into my home on his person. It's true, I used to smell that way too, but now I don't, AND, now I can actually smell, and it's stinking up MY home! But thank god, this should be his last week here, so that annoyance will be out of here very shortly.

Really?

Not to long ago, I probably would have been like your friend. I might have said the same things, but truthfully... I'd have just been scared to try to quit again. I know it's bad for me, so even thinking vaping is bad for my health really wasn't a deterrent like I probably made it out to be. But I liked doing it. I loved smoking & right now, one of the things that I like about vaping, is that second hand smoke from cigarettes now smell wonderfully intoxicating again.

Quitting smoking, taking up vaping, like all "change" is only going to happen when the individual is ready to accept it. Instead of antagonizing your friend, understand he's just like you were at one time. Just be a positive influence.

I don't know about you, but I like buying stuff. I've got two ego batteries that I got real cheap back when I started. I've got two newer batteries that I use most often & looking at buying another one. I've also got a drawer full of CE4/CE5 clearomizers & mtbakervapor keeps sending me a free bottle of something or other everytime I place an order with them.

If it were me, I'd consider giving my friend that old ego battery that I can do without, a CE4/CE5 & a bottle of that free juice, see what he thinks. Maybe even take him with me to the vapeshop next time I go.

She's thrilled I finally quit smoking, and understands that a great deal of money is at stake, so the media, corporate flunkies that they are, are toeing the party line, when in fact e-cigs are so far less dangerous than cigarettes that it's almost laughable what hay is being made of their "danger."
Andria

Do we really know that to be true?

I mean it took decades before we admitted how dangerous smoking tobacco was & decades still before we actually found out it was worse than we thought.

This ecig thing & the ejuice/internet/mail delivery stuff adds a whole bunch of other dangers all together. How do we know the mailman isn't lacing your juice with ecoli for the heck of it?

30 years from now, when they've stopped us from doing every other thing that brings us joy, they're going to tell us that water vapor causes cancer.

It's just a matter of time.

Same here. Not so much that I *loved* smoking, it wasn't that, it was just that I COULD NOT DO WITHOUT IT, and I was truly terrified to try again, when I had failed so many times before. Anytime my mom or my aunt would bring up, when are you gonna quit those things? I just brushed it off, "never," because I really didn't think I ever would, or could. The last week I smoked, I had a new pack and an open pack, and the day before I smoked my last, I gave away the unopened pack -- and nearly had a panic attack, a crying jag, *something*... all I could think of was what if I can't do it, and have to get the ol man to buy me more smokes... he's gonna be pi$$ed... even though I was already down to 1 a day, and not missing the other 17-20 I would normally have been smoking, if I hadn't been vaping... it's like a teddybear to a child, who can't conceive of there being any way of doing without that precious teddybear.

There was also the matter of expense, and when you're already spending $44/wk on smokes and having to stretch HARD to do that, it's hard to find the money just to begin, and very easy to make excuses about why it wouldn't work for you, anyway. It's like sour grapes... if you think it's out of reach, you just make excuses for why it's stupid to even try. I didn't start vaping with the intention of quitting smoking, nothing could have been farther from my mind. I just wanted to come in off the front porch and stop freezing to death just to satisfy my stupid habit, to me it was a way to "smoke" indoors without stinking up the joint. Well, wonders never do cease; it allowed me to not-smoke so many cigarettes, right from the very start, that I began to get a glimmer of the hope that I had put away, I thought, forever.

Today is 6 wks since I smoked the last one.

Oh I get your point...Im actually the same way. This is just a snippit of the whole convo, and was with a friend of 35 years so I said some things I wouldnt normally say to a casual "question asker".

I get it, and generally am the same way. I take liberties saying things to a best friend of 35 years I wouldnt otherwise say. Its not that I was busting his balls, I was simply, and pointedly, countering his objections :)

June 20, 2012 is the day my starter kit came and I joined ECF. I had been researching e cigs for 3 4 or 5 months. 2 months later I was completely free. I have not had one since my Volt died on a cruise my family and I were on and I bought a pack of smokes in mexico. It was tough to just find someone selling a pack in all the ports. They all wanted me to buy a carton. She charged me 6 bucks and I can still the look on her face on why I would pay 6 bucks.

I left a little less than half the pack on the ship.

So after a 30+ year smoker I guess 2 years isn't a long time. I'll take it though.

I do have an occasional cigar.

Stale cig smoke smells horrible. Freshly lit cig... after several pints of Guinness... oh mannnnnnnnn it smelled good.

I always have to laugh when someone brings up the PG is antifreeze point, yeah PG is used in anti freeze, it is also used in everything from FDA approved asthma inhalers and sodas, to cake batter. There are too many sheeple out there that just take what someone else says as fact just because its on the news or written on paper some where. Me I like to think for myself so I am gonna keep on a vapin :vapor:

I mix it with VG. Maybe 90/10 and some menthol and use it as a lip balm.
