Way off topic, I know, but still interesting.

Whitey Bulger was arrested by the FBI in Santa Monica, CA this evening. They received a tip due to their recent media blitz soliciting information, and it panned out.

For those of you not familiar with him, he was the person that Jack Nicholson's character in The Departed was loosely based, and is a very very bad guy.

Pretty much any kind of crime you can think of, he was into. Drugs, extortion, murder, murder for hire, ect and has been on the run since 1995.

Kudos to the FBI for taking this scumbag off the street.

Whitey was connected with the Winter Hill Gang in Somerville Massachusetts, named for the area of Somerville Avenue called, Winter Hill. I lived on Somerville Ave., in Ball Square, about four blocks from Winter Hill. I worked at a gas station on Somerville Ave., at the foot of Winter Hill.
I missed most of the "good 'ol days" obviously, but Winter Hill was a rather interesting place. You could sit in the Dunkin Donuts and watch the big, bad bullies come and go all day long. It was one of my favorite hangouts when I was a teenager. It took me a while to figure out why the same two detectives hung out at that Dunkin Donuts every day.
If even one-fourth of the stories that I heard about this guy are true, then he needs to go straight to the chair.

Unfortunately, we don't have the death penalty in Massachusetts. However, he also has charges in Oklahoma and Florida which he will face once he's been prosecuted in Massachusetts, and I believe that at least Florida out of those two states does have the death penalty. I would be very surprised if he isn't put to death for his crimes. Assuming he survives the trials, that is...he is pretty old after all.

@ Darth. I'm from Mass as well, so I know that they don't, but with the other charges out there, I was thinking that Mass might hand him over to another jurisdiction. Sadly, I don't believe that it will happen.

I'm actually heading up that way on July 2nd. I'll be staying primarily in Northern NH as that's where most of my family is now, but I've every intention of heading to the North Shore, even if it's just a day trip. I might even head over to the Garden to soak up some of that Bruins energy. After being in the South where hockey is hardly appreciated, just being in Boston after the cup win will be like that first sip of my favorite beer after a decade-long drought.

In states like Texas, Virginia and Florida, they execute condemned prisoners with regularity. In California, OTOH, a death sentence is more like Lifetime Bed & Breakfast (+ Lunch, + Dinner). Not that I'd care to spend any time, any where, sitting on Death Row.
