I was more or less forced into DIY. Hubby and I had to cut corners somewhere and knew we didn't want to sit in the dark to vape our commercial juice. Believe me, if it hadn't been a move out of desperation, we would not have made it this far because my first several batches were anything but good. :( Now it has become fun to be bold and daring since I have our trusty go to vapes down to a science. lol

I got into diy because I needed to save money.I quit smoking to save money and to be in better health, but trying different vendors to find that perfect juice for me got expensive. So I decided to find the recipes for the juices I liked and just buy the stuff to make it myself. So far I am happy I did. I have made the juice that is close to what I love and I made a all day vape that I need for work. Plus I like the idea that maybe one day I might make a great juice that everyone would love and could make easily at home without having to buy it from a vendor. I dont mean anything bad about the vendors and their juices.I know it takes time to make the juices and they have some really good ones out there. But I dont like the fact that they run out of stock so often that not everyone can try their (special) juice.

I actually find that the juice we make is far better tasting than almost anything I have bought. I have found a couple of good juices from suppliers....but the expense in finding the one or two was greater than the reward.

I have mixed many many flavors. Most of them are excellent. I have a couple that taste fine, but are not a preference for me. But my all time favorites are juices we have made DIY. And that is simply rewarding. And I can make allllll I want :)

Where are you guys coming up with your ideas for your concoctions? I just started and have not had a in your face juice yet. Of course, we are talking about one or two so I have a long way to go. My favorite juices from vendors has been from vapealiscious with extra flavoring. Can you lead me in the right direction?

You'll be hard pressed to find any of the vendor's recipes. About the best you can do is try to figure out what flavors you taste, purchase those flavors and go at it. We all have those special vendor blends that we'd love to recreate but we're stuck here surrounded by a multitude of different flavors and don't know where to begin. Start out with something simple and go from there. Good luck and keep us posted. We love sharing recipes and ideas.

All of the above, and especially the last one, and the first as well.
Started vaping, ordered about 15 different liquids, only liked three, and had bad allergic like reactions to one of those. So I felt really constrained by the premixed liquids. Not a lot of variety and availability here in the Netherlands either. Probably even less, with the current legislations issues.

With DIY, I can create exactly what I want, for a fraction of the cost, and as much as I want to.

When you stop and think about it, every vendor started out just like we are, trial and error, tweak, dump and start over until they arrived at their sweet spot. Then they started sharing it with others to see what they thought about it and the rest is history.

WHere do they all get their secrets from . It had to come from talking about it but iv looked and havent found a single thread like that .

Most people learn from others, a lot of DIY people will publish recipes (there are at least a half-dozen threads related to DIY recipes, scattered around ECF).

I chatted with boB before he and yssiM opened KBV, mainly about tobacco. Earlier, Nikhil was very active in the DIY section before he opened Purevapes. You try someone else's DIY, check their recipe if you like it, then either use it or tweak it into your own unique mix.

I am starting diy, because I can't find a flavor that I like. I love the dk mint (it's peppermint) but every other juice I have tried from various vendors, I hate. So this way at least, I can get a much smaller sample, and if I hate it, I'm only out the cost for a single dram of flavor. I am ok with menthol, but it's still not really making me happy as a daily vape.

I just did a cost comparison, and realized how much cheaper it can be. I scored a little bit of the juice that was on sale recently at Good Prophets (wish I had more cash, I would have bought lots more, but alas, we were between paychecks). I made up a 30ml (18mg) bottle of menthol, and figured it cost me $2 to make that bottle, including the crystals, and the PG to dilute. I'm danged impressed! At the moment, I figure I have enough liquid to make almost 800ml more liquid. Since that will last me about 8 months, I hopefully have enough time to catch another good sale on liquid.

I didn't know you weren't supposed to DIY when I started vaping, lol.

I just figured that since I had to order liquids with nicotine from abroad anyway, I might as well mix my own. I also had absolutely no idea what strength I would like, so that was another reason for mixing it myself.

So I was already committed to mixing my own liquid before I had vaped even one inhalation!

Now, when I have read a bit more and played around just a teeny tiny bit, I am very happy I chose this.
Especially since I am sure I will not be able to give up on cigarettes unless I find a way to add some of those other tobacco alkaloids to my future juices. And playing with that will either involve trying to find someone who supplies a WTA-extract, or trying to extract it myself from tobacco, or possibly even growing my own tobacco.

When in December I on a whim decided to try these "electric cigarettes", pardon me PVs, I had no idea it would so quickly turn into a hobby like this!

Cost didn't figure into my decision to DIY at first - either way I had to order things from abroad, and either way it felt expensive. But when I got a little bit more familiar with it all (and knew in about what range I liked my juice wrt nic and flavouring) I sat down and calculated a bit. And then I became *really* committed to DIY:
the cost of the raw materials for 1ml of eliquid that I make myself is around 0.05 €, the cost for 1ml of bought eliquid is anywhere between 0.36 € up to around a whole euro. Of course the calculate 0.05 cents/ml is a bit unrealistic as there is spillage, experiments that doesn't turn out so well, cost of bottles, syringes etc, flavours that I use once and never touch again etc. But even if we double it, to 10 cents/ml, it is significantly cheaper than buying ready made.

Shows how this sub has progressed. Most of the folks I learned the most from hardly ever post anymore, if at all.

I second Hoosier on this and would like to add:

-Its new for me (everything is at the 6 weeks stage!),so maybe even more fun than the vets!
-I have a sweet tooth (well, perhaps a whole set of sweet teeth even)
-I have a whole lot of crappy tasting juices to mess with
-Modding a crappy juice to something vapable...how sweet is that!

Will take delivery of my VG and PG tonight at the post office, let the modding begin!

Back when I started vaping there weren't very many good juice vendors like there are today. I had wasted a lot of money trying to find something I liked. Tasty Vapor had the best juice at the time (when he was still using Capella) but his juice was inconsistent and sometimes it would be great and other times would have too much cinnamon or something and not be very good. I got tired of wasting money and feeling like the vendors really didn't care about quality. I do believe that has changed but now that I DIY I have no interest in trying anyone else's...plus I don't want to like it more than mine. LOL

Now I love the control I have. If I go out I can vape a higher nicotine so I'm not always needing to hit it. When I'm relaxing at home I can vape whatever I feel like having and if I don't have it made up I can whip up a batch in a few minutes.

At first I spent a lot more on flavorings than I should have and it cost me more than if I just bought from vendors. Now it's very cheap for me to DIY because I have regular flavors that I buy so I get them in quantity. I still experiment some but mostly with the flavorings I have. Kind of like Taco Bell does. LOL

Also, when I was buying from vendors my attys would clog or die in a short time, now they last much longer. I know what I put in my mixes and don't have to worry about what flavor enhancers someone else might be adding that isn't good on equipment or our health. And I know that I can use the best ingredients available.

Mainly I like the control DIY gives me.

I do wish some of the veteran DIYers would come back. We learned so much from them. Several have gone on to become juice vendors. It's fun to go back and read some of the old DIY posts. Internet Archive Wayback Machine
