Why do you buy a particular box mod? What you look for?

Hi all,

I'm researching a lot on box mods and I'm trying to understand the theory behind peoples purchases because I'm a bit confused.

What exactly do you look for in terms of technical specs on a mod you're about to purchase? What features and specs would you like in one, almost like a moment where you say d"amn I wish this mod had x, y, z feature"... maybe another mod has the features, or maybe no one has the feature yet released. I know a lot of people complaint about the dna 30 about the internal lipo and they fixed that in the rdna.

I'm new to the scene so sorry for my noobness. I have a tesla mech mod lol.

I'll give an example, the vs rdna 30 is nice device, can't go wrong with evolv dna 30 chipset but the ipv 50 w by yihi sounds better on paper, designed pretty nice and selling for 1/3 of the price. Why is everyone jumping over the vapor sharks? I'm just trying to learn what is has to offer which is so much better than others considering the huge price gap and the fact that they sell TONS. Is the yihi chipset a crapshoot? Are there other chipset which is just as good as the evolv dna 30 if not better which everyone would rather have in a box mod?

Trying to learn here wish I got in to the scene years ago.

Personally, I like the box Mod's over all others because of their size to power. So if you can get a vapor shark with 30 watts or an ipv with 50, and only need (vape at 10-15watts) I would choose the smaller of the 2. Partly because I vape a Kayfun 3.1 a lot of the time. Now, other factors are quality. I have heard of the ipv burning up and melting on the inside, have yet to hear of a DNA doing this (aside form someone reversing the battery). The only time I will choose a larger box MOD over a smaller one would be in the case of a bottom feed MOD, or if I know I will be out for some time and want to use a dual 18650. So far, though not technically a box mod, my ZNA clone is fitting the bill for size and power. When the chip does go bad.... I'll swap it out with an original DNA 30

Quality of the chip is right at the top of considerations for me , It's either Evolve or YiHi for me . Equally important is build quality , the rest is personal preference . My iPV worked great for a few weeks and then started to fire and not turn off on it's own , very disappointing.

With any Chinese mod your taking a big chance , warranty is very important and unfortunately P4U has teamed up with a terrible warranty partner "ASMODUS" , they have changed the warranty terms to suit their preferences and have taken a "deal with it or piss off attitude" .

If i had the $$ i would definitely go with a VaporShark or other well established brand.

I love regulated power above all else, that said it is all worthless if it does not work.
No matter how well your regulated mod is made it will still never be as reliable as a mech. Thus my build philosophy for attys hasn't changed even though I jumped on the regulated train.

So I need a regulated mod that will work with my subohm builds just as well as my mechs.

The IPv2 has been my go to since I got it 3 months ago or so. I rarely build under .4 so I have more than enough headroom for any of my attys as far as power is concerned.

It is more accurate and reliable than either of my cloupors as well.

I really like having on board USB charging, but I hate the placement of the USB port. It's my only true complaint of the IPV2.

The fit and finish of the box and general form factor aren't as nice as the Hana style box but it's not even remotely as important to me as the functionality of the board itself.

My ideal mod would take a Hana box and stuff a yihi board into it.

So here's my short answer
- power range
-accuracy and reliability
-price (sorry fancy expensive mod makers)
-form

Speaking of which has anybody seen the new sx mini?
Zna styling.

Single 18650 with on board USB charging (with the port not on the bottom)

Are the Yihi boards really that unreliable? Is 100watts even needed...seems a bit overkill? I would think 30-50 is more than sufficient for anyones setup.

Personally, I would take quality over anything and it seems like there's multiple cases of the Yihi boards frying.

Are the evolv and yihi chipsets the top 2 on the market these days or are there others out there?

How about battery power? Would you rather have a smaller box mod with the 18650 or carry around a larger mod which is loaded with a 26650? That has crossed my mind a few times. Is there a huge performance advantage if you were to run a box mod with an 18650 2000mah cell in comparison to having a 26650 4000mah cell loaded? This is in relation to using any chipset, evolv dna 30, yihi 50/100 watt...does battery power have A LOT to do with it?

The vast majority of the yihi boards are good. Sure, some duds slip out here and there, but that is true of Evolv and anyone else really.

Who needs 100w? Cloud chasers mostly. 200w is right around the corner. With the right atty set up it isn't as crazy as you think.

I'm not sure what you mean by performance advantage as far as having an extra 2000mah. Will it noticeably last longer? No doubt. Even "just" 1000mah is noticable.
Would I be willing to carry around a considerably larger mod for the extra battery life? Probably not. 2500mah gets me through work and then some.
Plus I cut my vaping teeth with mechs, so I already consider 18650 box mods to be on the big side.
I could possibly see using a 26650 box at home, but I don't see any big advantage for home use when I know I can charge whenever I need to.

Are Yihi and Evolv on top of the vape game? As far as what is commonly available I would say so.

Evolv is a true pioneer in the industry and continue to be. Yihi is leading the way for power and availability .

You have provape and their new P3, which apparently will remind you to brush your teeth and when to adjust your clock for daylight savings time and a bunch of other features I think most of us really don't care about coupled to an expensive device that can't supply enough power to anything beyond a kayfun. (I know I am going to make a lot of friends with that one).

Then you have your less common OKR and GE boards etc etc. Good quality, considerable power, but low on the features and not common outside of custom and boutique mods.

I could go on and on, but again I do believe Yihi and Evolv are top of the game. Check out a recent VJ article, he actually thinks Evolv is going to get left behind soon by Yihi (and China in general)

What about new DNa chip with temp control at the coil. Or sx350 chip. I mainly look for chip set and one with a swappable battery with usb charge port. I know you mentioned price. But something's are worth the $$

Thanks guys, I just heard about the DNA 40 a day ago! Looks like a cool chip. I was taking a look at the SX350 Mini, I like the screen! Anyone know what the gravity sensor does on it?

It has a gravity sensor to adjust power settings..like the sx350, you can choose to use them or not. The sx350 mini seems like it will only have three power adjustments... "soft, standard, and powerful."

I'm curious about the joules measurement..edit- all there is on yihi's site is "*joules".

The IPV mini is probably going to be my next mod..

jkim, what mod is that you have pictured? Looks very neat...kinda like a zero, but not.. put "mk-II" in your google query...you get a lot of random military stuff..lol I'm glad I was reminded of the suppressed ruger m-II though..

I look at the specs first. How high and low can it go? The lowest resistance it can support so I don't do something stupid . The price and the warranty.

I have both mods with evolve and yihi chips. I like them both.

Have a Sigelei 100w on the way. I'm not much of a dripper so I don't know if I'll ever push 100w. But, the price was right and 2 batteries will last a long time.

The IN'AX MK-II is just the atty. That certainly looks like a Zero mod to me.

I setup the wifey with 2 Eleaf iSticks and 2 Nautilus tanks w/ BVCs. She's in heaven. They work nearly as good as my subs on mechs, and the iStick last all day. Cost right around $100 for all.
