Why does my protank II taste so bad?

The PT2 is really a good little tank and was all I used for almost 3 years. However, it really needs to be used with an air flow control. Kanger Airflow Control Valve V3

I bought mine when it was *the* thing to have and continued using them because I could easily rebuild the coils (I'm cheap that way).

With so many better options out there, (I'm partial to the sub tank mini) I wouldn't spend the money for the AFC. However, I also wouldn't toss the PT2 (just in case you run into someone that has one that would be willing to give it to you). ;)

I used PT2s at the very beginning. I was just starting out and I figured my taste buds were shot. I was glad someone got me on mint juices. At least I had some juice that I could taste.

There are a lot of cheap clones in the world of factory made coils. And, the smaller ones like the PT2 can be burned up at the slightest push of power. Once burned, toss the coil, toss the juice and clean the PT2 very well.

People were talking about the re-buildable tank atomizers (RTA) and I thought I would get one and some tools, wire, and cotton. Took me like three tries on making a coil and I was amazed at the flavor. That was about the 6th month mark. Within a month my nine PT2s were passed on to a newer vaper and I think I had about 8-9 RTAs.

I started learning about cloud chasing and flavor chasing and...the hobby. Good times and so much healthier than smoking.

Chels, I always had the same problem with those kanger factory coils. From evod to PT2. They are trash when new. They work great once rebuilt with cotton. Simple to do. Tons of YouTube videos to learn how. Or try just rewicking the coil that's already in there.

Hopefully, someone will help us figure it out, Phil P. I have had one of these before and it had no problems so I am totally perplexed. Even after changing the coil and juice, the flavor isn't right.

Is the flavor bad or just muted? For me it just lacks flavor

So it is OK to remove the silica wick and only use cotton? That's great because I have tons of cotton and no silica wick? Funny, I was just watching a video on someone that did a hybrid wick! but I do prefer cotton so I am going to try your suggestion now

Both. I have two of these and one of them has muted flavor and the other one has consistently burned flavors

Oh yeah I stuck with those kanger coiled tanks of all sorts for about nine months. Got so frustrated with that silica crap that the first thing I'd do is yank it out.

Yeah, I love that quitting smoking isn't only great for my health, but I have a whole new hobby that I love!

Oh and go easy with those vision spinners. They've got a lotta kick to em. I have 2 of the 1650mah and could rarely run them over 3.7-3.9 volts. Retired them both when they started autofiring. Pretty sure mine were clones.

@ChelsB - Those coils also come in a version with the Japanese Organic Cotton wicks in them, which are so much better. They cost the same ($3.95/box of 5) with either kind of wick in them at Desert Vapes. Tish and her husband sell only authentic Kanger coils, too...no knock-offs. Been buying most of my coils from them for several years. When she runs a sale (which is pretty frequently) they're an even better bargain, too! Oh, her S/H is very reasonable, too!

Forgot this: If you use the code 1storder10 at checkout...you'll receive 10% off your first order, no matter how big or small it is. She gave me that code to pass along to others.

I'll check it out! I like to give the smaller businesses my dime!

The airflow control really changes the PT II for the better.

The V3 if hard to find now-a-days, but Mt Baker still has them.

Highly recommended as well as the simple winding and PT rebuilding approaches I've promoted for 3 years on…

Protank MicroCoil Discussion!!
Tensioned Micro Coils. The next step.

Tension winding produces very stable coils with very uniform output solving most of the vapor density and coil stability issues with the PT. You do then need airflow, big time. It's a great tank with an efficient coil right on up to 12W and above. Still use 'em, rebuild the coils but prefer the Mega variant for these legacy coils.

Drop a post on the PT thread anytime for assistance from subscribers or I'll get to it.

Good luck and Happy New Year all. :)

Good answers, except I run all that old stuff even lower, 3.5V with the 2.2Ω coils or 3.6V with the 2.5's and forget about the more commonly available 1.8's, they need like 3 volts or something. Works out to about 5.2 watts. As power varies at the square of voltage, you were running almost twice that. A little more can be used if you only take short drags, but these low output devices are all about long drags. While for some reason the EVOD tanks make more flavor with the same coils, the mPT2's still have more flavor and is more enjoyable to me than most of the newest stuff. I don't see any need to redesign or alter it much. I used to run Uncle Junk's Key Stone in mine. Results in a amazing tasting vape in a classy looking tank from a juice that easily turns to just overwhelmingly sweet at higher output (plus it's too expensive to use at a high rate). My DIY candy apple was good too.

As to silica, yeah I like cotton rewicks too (you are using vaping cotton such as organic? some has an off flavor) but silica can be fine with some flavors. It has its own flavor to it at first though. It's not "horrible" but burning taste from overpowering is horrible, and good you find it horrible because you shouldn't vape that. A really bad burn requires a full washout and air out if it still smells.

Funny, but I found the same thing…the PT Mini was an outstanding little clearo. With tight small t.m.c.'s got noticeably better flavor and overall output than the PT, particularly the 2 and drilling out base air holes. You're getting it right if you're suddenly seeing all the high sweet or other accent notes. My fav carry was the PTM2 on an 18490 Magneto for the longest time.

You describe why I moved on from silica early on and stressed contact coils. Burny don't fly where the real vape goes.

    Good luck and HNY. :)
