Surely a dumb question, but it just dawned on me today. I use a 1st generation REO Grand (no vv or anything). It's mechanical. There's nothing electronic here. It's got an old fashioned Bauway 510lr atty...
And seriously, nobody would EVER mistake this thing for a cigarette... most of my friends and family call it my "detonator".

So, if it's not electronic and it's not a cigarette, then regulations that say "No Electronic Cigarettes" don't apply to me, right? (Half sarcasm)

Here is a little test you can conduct to prove or disprove your theory.
Go to a hospital and sit in the maternity ward waiting room and vape away. If others consider it a e-cigarette, I'm sure they will let you know within the first puff or two. (Half sarcasm) :)

Well, all of the more advanced devices (APVs, mods, PVs, whatever you choose call them) are just an evolution of the original e-cigarette and serve the same function with the same basic operating principles. The physical form may have changed drastically, but it is still the same basic technology in the same application, so it makes perfect sense that the term "electronic cigarette" is still applied :2c:

Most of the terms we use in this community are not well known outside of it, either. I rarely see other vapers in the wild and if someone asks what my device is usually the only description I can respond with that makes any sense to them is "electronic cigarette". As long as that is the term used in the media, it is going to be the one that everybody who is not in the know knows

The original e-cigarette was the size and shape of a regular cigarette. It was a long time before consumers began using anything but them. By then the name was ingrained, although once one makes it as far as ECF the PV or mod or "detonator" names are much more easily recognized.

We're the victims of a successful advertising program for the early models, and it's tough to change it now.

This explains why we use the term E-Cigarette Why It's Called An 'E-Cigarette' And 'E-Smoking'

I hope in my lifetime that PV becomes a more recognized name for what we use. I also hope that it remains a viable alternative to smoking. That is what I am fighting for at the moment, keeping these things available for me and all the other vapers. Also for those that want to quit smoking.

Excellent article you linked, thank you! And I agree- pv is probably the best term that includes everything from the old cig a likes to my reo to today's gadgets and tomorrow's. I just want to be allowed to vape in peace and not be lumped in with smokers. I caught myself daydreaming about being told no e-cigs and being able to legitimately say it's not electronic or a cigarette, so bugger off!

Take your battery out and see how great your mechanical vape is.

In the end it is foolish to think that name, vaporizer vs e cigarette, would change the minds of any who are are against nicotine use, whether it would be smoking/snuff/vapor. They would attack the "name" regardless of what it was. Heck the fox news article today stated smoking is down and snuff use is steady. According to the CDC that is a problem. Also according to the CDC snuff can be used in places that traditional smoking tobacco can't which is also a problem.
