What I'd like to know is, why are there no rda's that you can take the cap off of without it being screwed onto something? Just give me a base section that's 1/4 inch thick, maybe with a little knurling.

The AGI in dripper mode has a base, not quite 1/4" but pretty thick, that sticks out below the cap. Although it also has very very tight fitting o-rings so it's still impossible to remove the cap while off a device. That could easily be remedied with some smaller o-rings though, if you are really content on finding a dripper that can be cracked open without mounting it. ;)

As someone else mentioned, the current way most posts are configured is simply the cheapest/easiest way to make it.

To have an offset center post you need a more complex post setup. The center pin can no longer just go straight up through the middle, so you need some sort of intermediary connection between the 510 and the post, which adds extra manufacturing costs, extra failure points, etc. You need additional insulators, that probably are going to be more complex and costly to manufacture than the little round grommets currently used.

Cost difference is very tiny of a single atty, but when you have tens of thousands+ every cent adds up into big money.

With triple post attys it would be even more difficult, as you would need to fit 3 posts in there somehow without the one post being in the middle.

The easiest solution is to move the posts closer to the center post, which I agree would make it a lot easier to route your longer wicks. In my dualcoil builds I usually run a single long doughnut shaped cotton wick around the entire diameter of the atty with the coils mounted on either side obviously. With some attys the clearance between posts and cap are very small and this becomes an issue for me.

Other people have posted some attys like you describe, but then just are terribly common for the above reasons. Usually they only go through the trouble doing that when it's designed as a center airflow device, where you have no other choice. (unless you are UD and make airflow through a center post like on the T4, pretty clever actually but not really workable for RDAs due to size issues.)
