would be nice if ecf reconsidered the requirement of 15 posts before allowing a signature. new members need the encouragement of a quitsmoking banner the most and, if i'm not the exception, tend to read more than post which is the way it should be.
The purpose of the limitations is to prevent spammers from coming in, creating an account, and adding spam links in their signature. It's meant to protect the membership.
i read the reasoning behind the requirements but don't think a 15 post minimum is a deterrent to anybody out to spam. i've joined back in febr to research, have stopped smoking completely as of 3-01, found lots of info on these forums and i'm still below 15 posts. plus, found quite a few threads where people just posted repeatedly to get up to the requirements. not sure how others feel about this but to me that's the only thing i found unlikeable with ecf

I am a moderator at another very large forum that doesn't have this limitation. Over the past few months, the majority of our "new members" are spammers that register, wait an hour or two and then log back in to add a four link spam signature. I have been very busy cleaning this garbage up. They do this for Search Engine Optimization purposes. I am in the process of talking our Admin into implementing a policy just like this.
IOW, yes, this policy is very necessary these days.
that's besides the point at the moment. what i was trying to bring up is that new members would probably benefit the most from the smokefree banners as an encouragement but cannot do so until they have posted 15 times. i'm sure everybody, sooner or later, comes across a thread where a newcomer is posting just to reach this threshold. some get deleted by the moderator, some get overlooked. but why should this be necessary? as you can see from my join date it took me about 2 month to come close. the forums have been a great help and i found answers to pretty much all of my questions by reading and not posting. so why impose this arbitrary number of 15? are spammers more likely to post 5, 10 or 15 times? who came up with the number and why that number? just curious

Pretty much this. We are a massive forum, with lots of traffic, so we are a big target for spammers, spambots, phishing sites, etc. We need to stay proactive in keeping our members protected from spam and/or harmful sites.
I really didn't find it too much of a hassle to wait until I have however many posts to get my signature. As long as I'm not smoking I am happy. Maybe you need to vape a higher nic if it is bothering you soo badly...
