Wick Fluffing

What am I trying to accomplish when I do this? What should they look like? Am I trying to fill the hole with wick? Unravel them?

Just pull it up a bit. Careful though, some coils are wound so tight they won't move much. If you feel resistance or tearing, you should stop before you felt it xD

Yup. Just kinda pull it up a little like Galth said. You are trying to loosen it up a bit and making sure it's not pushed into the ceramic cup notch. This simply helps eliminate any pinch points that could lesson the wicking. The older and more cleaning (dry burns) you do the more gentle you will need to be as the wick can/will start to fray a little where it enters the cup.

Only do this when the wicks are clean and free of juice. It's OK after they have been rinsed, but better to do when dry(ish). When there is e-liquid in the wick they are very very fragile and can easily come apart. When dry they are fairly robust and can take a lot more mistreatment.
