I'm taking my first step into rba's with an Augvape Merlin. However my current mod doesn't go above 30W and doesn't have TC. From what I've read here the materials have different base resistances, so if I can't go higher than 30W which is my best option?
I might very well buy a new mod but I want to see how well it works on my current one first.

To me clapton (is clapton and coiled synonymous?) wires seem easier to build with than regular single ones and I would probably prefer that. Also how does the thickness play into needed wattage?

And lastly cellulose or cotton?

I'm into TC these days, but on my old 30W mod I used single strand kanthal, either 28 or 30 gauge. IIRC, I went for around 1.2 to 1.8 ohms. I tried to get 6-8 wraps around a 2.0-3.0 diameter mandrel. I have not used clapton wire but I would think that it would need more power than you can get out of a 30W mod and I don't think it would perform well at higher resistances. I'm a single coil, MTL guy though. I'm sure some more experienced folks will be along shortly to give you more information.

I used cotton back in those days, but now I use rayon wicks. Much better wicking, and it lasts longer too. But in most cases you need to trim the tails to get it to work properly.

You didn't say if you were looking for a sub ohm build or not. I don't build sub ohm except for TC, so my comments above are based on single coil, MTL builds.

Is sub ohm even a possibility for 30w, wouldn't I need a stronger mod for that? Honestly, I'm considering buying a new mod with the same order as the Merlin. I don't really vape MTL so maybe I should get a better mod for more satisfying hits.

I've been vaping for a few years now but not having any experience with anything other than clearomizers has left my knowledge regarding ohm and such a bit lacking. I just went with the 1.6ohm coils for my Nautilus Mini and played around with the wattage until I found the sweet spot.

I never get near 30 W and i sub ohm and MTL exclusively. In my Kayfun v5 clone at the moment i have a 28 ga SS simple coil at .73 ohms vaping at 10 watts. In my merlin 1.8 ohm simple 28 ga Kanthal a1 vaping at 10 watts.I have no idea why you need anywhere near 30 watts at all.

Sub ohm might be possible with 30W, but I expect it would not perform well compared to more powerful mods. It wouldn't make for long battery life either. My recommendations above worked fine for me on my old Sigelei 30 watt mini with either a Lemo tank or my KFL+ V2 from EhPro. If single coil MTL is your thing that would be hard to beat.

As far as a new mod, there are too many to choose from. I am currently running 3 - RX200S, IPVD2, and Evic VTC mini. I'd have to say of the 3 the VTC mini is my current favorite. All of them are TC capable and I still build single coil, for MTL on restricted airflow toppers. The KFL+ V2 is my all time favorite, but the subtank mini is easy to build on and it can be built for MTL use. If you do get a new mod, be sure it has TC. Even if you don't use it right away you'll want the option later.

I figured it could be done. Told you someone else would be along with more experience than me. :D

Well fair enough then, thanks. Like I said I would call myself anything but knowledgeable when it comes to this, hence my possibly dumb question.
Maybe I'm making clapton wire out to be more than it is but I've seen people say how much they prefer it and especially for the Merlin. Would I need more wattage for it like tokarev said (it does make sense in my head anyway) and if I do, would 30w still be sufficient?

I'm pretty tempted to go for a new mod, but it would have to be 2x 1850. I need muh capacity. Not having tried airflow toppers, I still think I'm going to not use one as I prefer high airflow. What exactly are the pros of TC? Maybe I'm getting a bit off-topic for the board at this point.

I haven't used them yet (except to test for DOA) but I have 3 Cuboids in the vapacolypse box. They are the smallest 2 battery mod I have seen. Others may be smaller but I haven't seen them yet. :) Or you could go for 3 batteries in the RX200/RX200S family. Those are pretty big for a pocket though.

If you're after high airflow, I'm not your guy. Like I said before, I'm sure someone with more experience will be along soon to help out.

This is probably not the place to discuss TC in detail, but you can check the Temperature Control sub forum in APV and Mods Discussion. Use the search feature if you have specific questions.

Looking at reviews of the RX200s and RX2/3 right now, looks promising. I'll probably end up making a thread on the TC forum and look for further input. Damn, starting to feel like I've been all over the forum today asking for help to pick parts.

Don't focus too much on the resistance, doesn't in itself mean much on a regulated mod. It's about coil mass. You can build a high resistance coil with thick wire and it'll require far more power than a low resistance coil using the same wire.
