Hi, I was thinking about building a 9volt mod box, with a 9volt rechargable nimh battery.....would that be too much voltage? Too hard on cartos, atomizers, etc?

No atomizers for that kind of voltage I think anyways,it would need like 6 ohms (some tech head will shim-in with the maths!)
4.2-5+ ohm attys would work on it. You would only have to take a small 2-3 sec drag and have plumes of vapor

A 9v battery doesn't have the current capacity to drive that. If you want to build a box mod, go to Welcome to MadVapes LLC and look at what they have in kit form. The top of their line also has a digital voltmeter readout that installs on the box to provide an LED voltage display.
Suggestion for a new modder:
Unless you can do the design, analyze the limitations of each component, and test the performance against the design, build something that has already worked for others.
If electronics is not your 'long suit', copy a design.
If you want to learn, take little steps. A few dollars in resistors, LEDS, switches, some AA 1.2 volt Nimh cells, a battery tray, and you can learn as you play LEDs are great teaching aids. Get a cheap digital meter while you're at it.
Modding can be fun especially if it's a leaning exercise also.

A 9v battery is also a package of 6 small cells in series to get to 9v, each about 200 mAh and smaller than 10440's. With NiMh's they are a bad idea from the start as the nominal voltage of each cell is 1.2 and not 1.5. Sorry, but not impressive for ecig use.
In addition to what Rocketman said, learn something about electronic theory and the laws that govern electronics. Ohms law is a good start. Studying typical circuit designs for ecigs will go a long way toward understanding the values of components, such as batteries that can supply enough current. Ohms law will show you how voltage, resistance, and current are related.

Building that kit will give you extensive knowledge in what it takes to make and ecig work. Google the part numbers on the chips and the other parts to find spec sheets, study the schematic, and understanding will begin to blossom.
I still think resistors and LEDs, 9 cent resistors, 10 cent LEDs, is a good way to learn about semiconductors.
An LED is a diode, half a transistor and conduction still dumbfounds many modders. I see comments about how to hook them up, and answers that don't many any sense. Run them just past the knee, and keep the dissipation below max rated.

It's hard to vape if you blow your lips off. You'll have a poor seal going forward.
