I know it's not the question, but IV been charging my mech batts with a 24000 mah solar power bank (connected to a xtar vc4) for a couple of days now and it's been working fine for 3 or 4 batts a day.
That is interesting. I wish he would have mentioned how much force was needed to turn it though. 5 watts might be good enough for a MTL clearo with a 2.2 - 2.4 ohm coil.

I like this a lot. Reverse EMF from hand cranking a small geared DC motor is my choice for winner of this idea consortium. It wouldn't take much to turn it into an 18650 charging device if you had the time to crank it for a couple of hours and a meter to monitor progress. A single diode in a half wave rectifier and a capacitor and load resistor to filter the peaks and it would charge a battery.
Plug in chargers are my goto charging devices. When the power's off there's always the USB plug in my pickup to run the charger or just charge a mod from that port. Past that I guess I could rig up a 12V connection to my lawn tractor battery to run the charger from the DC plug.
