I have a disease called ulcerative colitis, similar to crohns, and their have been many studies showing the positive effects of nicotine putting people with my condition into remission. I have never smoked before so that's why you might think I'm crazy for trying this out. I have tried nicotine patches with limited success as they are very expensive, but with an ecig I am able to control the amount of nicotine I take in and it's much cheaper.
I get my dse103 tomorrow hopefully and will let you guys know how it goes. Once again please don't flame me for my decision in trying to furher my health through this method. Thanks for any help and this awesome forum!

James, I was diagnosed with crohns about five years ago. I am very lucky in that I have been able to use diet alone to control it for the most part. I still have bad days once in a while. The one thing I would tell you is that you will really need to drink a ton of water. This does make you dehydrated and my first few days useing my PV I did become constipated. Don't worry too much just remember to drink lots of water or gatoraid or whatever.

As you might know crohns is the opposite of ulcerative colitis when it comes to smoking. Those of us with crohns shouldn't be smoking at all, but I have never been able to quit and I like the idea of putting a lot less chemicals into my body.

Good luck.

Any medication you take for a chronic illness is used regularly whether it is physically addictive or not. If it works for you, taking an occasional puff on a PV would not be much different than taking any other maintenance medication to help control your condition. And you might find a very low level of nicotine will work.

Nicotine is a vasopressor. If you have a tendency toward high blood pressure, you should probably get yours checked a little more frequently than usual at first. (For those of us who smoked, getting rid of all those other chemicals in cigarettes results in lower BP despite this.)

Wow you guys freaking rock! Sorry I'm just used to people getting flamed at other forums such as phone forums and game forums. Thanks for all the replies and support, and I totally support you guys for giving up smoking or at least choosing a healthier method. My father quit smoking for my benefit and I know how hard it really is. You guys are awesome and I already feel like family.

I have read over and over through these forums and have a pretty good base. But when I have any questions I know I can definitely come here. Once again, thank you for all your kindness.

Can't seem to edit my posts, but yes captJ, actually both are found to be helped by nicotine. Actually pharm companies are researching putting nicotine into a lot of their anti-inflammatory drugs, so we're one step ahead! haha

@bradsmith, sorry to hear you have crohns, i have had ulcerative colitis for about 8 yrs now and am only 24. I will remember to drink tons of water, thanks for that tip!

@Poeia, yeah basically you are right. The only difference between a prescribed drug or any drug for that matter is the amount you use.

@slighter and Cody M, thanks for the help and friendliness! I will definitely PM you if I ever have any crazy questions or any questions if I can't find anything on the forum.

@ames001, yeah i think I have seen something about it helping bipolar. So we have to remember to keep spreading the good word and product of e-cigs!!

@zoomie61, 4 months man! Congratulations! And thanks for not setting me on fire lol

Jmsdvs welcome to the forum! [edit: you too Spaz!] You are definitely on one of the friendliest forums I have found anywhere (on any topic). You will get all your questions answered here. Now, you might get different answers from different people, but you will most assuredly get answers. And from what I have seen, no one gets flamed that didn't start it (on purpose. some ppl do that:rolleyes:)

Good luck and feel free to ask any questions you have.

BTW: you have to get 15 posts before you can do a few things, and editing your posts is one of them.

WOW! You just gave me my first person to share vaping with! My sister has ulcerative colitis, and I KNOW she's never smoked cigs before (Army brass, 24 years in)...

But I WILL ping her and ask if she's ever heard the nicotine angle from her doctor.

And, no, there's no way anyone around here will say anything negative to you, my friend. We're all trying to get what we need in a healthy way.

Happy Vaping, I REALLY hope it works out for you!

ahh! I'm going crazy! My first Ecig is here in san antonio, but I won't get it till tomorrow! ugh, I just want to start already! Any suggestions on helping me keep my mind off it? I had to miss work today cuz my colon was so bad. Been playing Modern Warfare 2 to help pass the time lol

Welcome! It won't be long until you're experiencing what we all rave about! If you get bored playing Modern Warfare, we can be pretty entertaining on here :D

Count me in as another person with a chronic disease that can honestly say vaping has done nothing but improve my symptoms. I have JRA and have found it impossible in the past to quit smoking.

I was able to quit by vaping! The nicotine benefits me in a bunch of ways, including with the ulcerative colitis that piggy-backed itself onto the auto-immune disease. I totally understand what you go through. Feel free to PM me as well if you have any questions or just want to chat!

I'm hoping that vaping brings you much needed relief - it's an awful thing to live with at times. I personally hate having to prednisone burst when I flare, and not only have I not had to prednisone burst, I haven't been taking any anti-inflammatory meds, less than half the pain meds and I have more stamina and energy that I've had in years. A result of vaping? Who knows, it's only been a month.... a result of quitting smoking? I'm sure it's a huge part of it. Does it matter? Bottom line - nope - as long as it's working for you - go for it!!

Good Luck!!

James, just some tips while you are waiting. Usually the tips are related to how vaping is a different technique than smoking. Because you have never smoked, its a little harder to describe.
Firstly, even some smokers find the hit of an ecig to be kind of harsh on the throat at first. For you I'm guessing this may be even more harsh. So take it slow, don't drag for too long before you inhale. Also, I wouldn't recommend that you do a direct inhale as that can make it even more harsh.
Again, not being a smoker, you probably don't know what I mean by direct inhale. (maybe you do, but I will explain anyway). There are two different methods to vape (or smoke). In the direct inhale you draw the smoke (vapor) directly into your lungs as you take the hit. The other method (don't know what it's called), you fill your mouth with smoke/vapor first (like filling your mouth full of liquid when drinking from a straw), then you inhale once your mouth is full. This second method is the most commonly used among smokers/vapers, and will reduce the sting a little.
The other thing that may help you a lot is buying juices that are VG based. One of the reasons that a lot of ppl get dry/sore throats when they start vaping is that the prefilled carts are usually PG based. The PG will make the throat hit stronger, but being a non-smoker, (again just guessing) you are probably not concerned with throat hit at all, and will probably even prefer something with less throat hit.
So if you find vaping to be hard on your throat, look for some good VG juices.

Sorry for the long post and sorry if I over-explained it a little. Just want to help make it work for you. And like I said, it's a little harder to explain to someone who has never smoked.

Good luck bud, and let us know how it goes.

@Remie, Sorry to hear that you have to deal with UC as well. Yes it is tough, but it's apart of our lives now and we have to move forward no matter what. I will definitely hit you up and see how you're doing from time to time for sure. Glad to hear that you are doing ok though without meds.

@highping, freaking awesome tips man. I definitely learned a lot. What's funny is I ordered all of my DIY stuff vg based, just cuz I heard it was healthier and sweeter. Thanks for the inhaling tips, I did learn a little bit as I didn't really know how to inhale. I've never done any drugs (illegal) because I am finishing up my degree in Criminal Justice and don't want anything on my shoulders, so i'm not used to inhaling anything.

I'll definitely keep you guys update on my progress and let you know if it helps or not. Thanks again

Also, since I'm not used to the nicotine, what side effects do you think I'll have? I'm starting out on 6mg then working up to 14mg then stronger if i need it. Thanks

James D.
