Try other flavors other than tobacco.
Research and shop around, for the best prices. Also, many online vendors have coupon codes.
Don't feel pressured to purchase high end mods or e-liquid.
Don't over-tighten parts
Date your e-liquids, as they come in
Steep your e-liquid, if possible
Shake your e-liquid really well, before use
Be battery safe!

I'm new too but some advice I can give is start out with a vaporizer. Don't waste your money on the cigalikes. That was a mistake I made. It only ended in money loss and frustration until I got my vaporizer! With a cig-a-like your batteries last a few drags, with a vaporizer they last into 2 days with heavy vaping. With a cig-a-like they don't produce very much vapor and zero throat hit. With a vaporizer you get plenty of vapor and a good throat hit. Cig-a-like cartridges cost TWICE as much as juice for the vaporizer. Cig-a-likes only have a few flavors, juice for vaping has hundreds of flavors! So basically those are some majob reasons to just go straight to the vaporizer. It will save you money and stop any frustration that comes with the cig-a-like. Hope this helps. Best wishes

Make a conscious decision that this will work. If you ain't committed you're wasting time and money.
Sit down at a local vape shop and try juice before you begin buying. Sounds good doesn't mean tastes good. Don't fall for the 'Love at First Sight' syndrome.
If your goal is 'cloud chasing' set your sights on that kind of equipment. And be ready to 'Roll Your Own' to get there (building coils, wicks, etc). Not recommended for newbees but, your call.
VV or VV/VW mod, Glass BCC tank and spare atomizer heads, Charger, bottle of juice are minimum requirements with backups for each. Post on ECF what you decide you need for critique (just remember to Add Salt, lol).
As we've all learned things don't always go as planned/advertised. The very best equipment will at times have issues. Things to be prepared for: Gurgling, Leak, Battery Issues, It won't work, Ran out of......, etc. Find a local vape shop or a vaping friend with knowledge, or post on ECF, for help with problems you can't fix.

Basically I would tell them to start small and work your way up. Start off with a little eGo 1100 mAh battery. If you feel that's not giving you the desired affect move up to different mods. Depending on the amount the person smokes a day I'd recommend starting at around 1.8% for somebody who was a pack a day smoker. Don't go out and just buy something on a whim and do a little research about what it is you're looking for. The more you know the better off you'll be and the better experience you will have.

Although I strongly agree with the back-ups for everything comment.....................

Know yourself and your own motivations when making choices. If you do not like fixing things when they break, don't buy rebuildables no matter how many people suggest you do. If you don't have a lot of spare time, don't buy something that can require an hour or better of your time nightly, if you want to be a dragon blowing clouds that will make the Care Bears come out of it, don't buy an eGo battery..............then educate yourself

Ask questions when you make online purchases-- that is why people are there. When I started making the transition from topcoil CE5's to bottom coil clearos, I didn't know how universal the replaceable coil heads were. Now I have an oversupply of multiple different brands-- and I am doing wick and coil jobs on them as well. The budget I have set for myself is going to be a piece of cake!!

Always ask questions.
