Stevo, so sorry for your loss my friend. Having gone through the same with both of my parents and a brother in a 3 year period I know what your going thru. Just know that we are all here for ya if you need anything.

I think there is some hesitation as zen himself has said that he does not want these screws to be removed (it will void warranty).... If you are losing power it may be in the switch.... Do u have magnets or spring? How many ohms are you running? If you are running really low ohms the "safety" spring in the switch may be limiting you, in which case I'd say magnets will provide full power for you....
Just saying there may be another way to get the performance you desire without voiding a lifetime warranty, just my half-nickel

those center screws do pull right out. I take mine out of the carto when I fill it, that way if I get a little floody it just drips out the bottom instead of the air holes. and when I got my zen the gold coating on the spring wasn't so hot. they sent another one out that was pretty..
I think a lot of the problems are not so much the device but the carto's. the quality and consistency of quality in some of these cartos that I wont name,,, are not the best..

I think whats going on with the heat is that the boge is needing for power to push it to perform well then what should be needed. if I hold it to my ear I get a nice pop.crackle,pop. so its hitting, just not performing well..
